Default DIY UTV help appreciated

I'm aware that this topic is generally not well received. With that said, I've done a few restless nights googling and haven't come up with a whole lot of info.

I've debated on what platform to begin with, from riding mower, go-kart & golf cart. In the end, I have a full size ATV frame that I will be modifying. Its got the frame, suspension & wheels. Not much else, other than a gear reducer.

Please keep in mind that I do not expect to build a fancy, adrenaline pumping, mud slinger for pennies. Certainly I can find a used JD Gator or craigslist, but a big reason for this project is to practice certain skills and the personal satisfaction I get from oddball projects. Any useful guidance would be greatly appreciated.

What I'm really after here, is a very basic putter to help my elderly in-laws out on the ranch so walking the fence line is a bit easier. Single digit speed, carry >1 person + small bed for equipment/hay. Electric start, auto w/reverse. Mostly concerned about a low gear. Land is pretty flat, but they do have a good bit of soft sand.

My main question is where I can find a suitable engine/transmission combo?
Also, would be nice to have an electrical setup that can run headlights, an occasional winch use and possibly a cooling fan since nothing ruins a good toy like Texas heat in the summer.

What is the frame you have? That's going to determine what will fit.

Looks like an old 92-94 Polaris Trail Boss 250... or what's left of one. Look on the right side frame down tube for any vin# info.

Found number after some sanding. Now how do I figure out model info? Thanks for your help so far.

Etched numbers are the vin #,plus unless it's been ground off, should have a W92,W94,etc with some numbers. This is the series and year model.Example:
1992 ATV TRAIL BOSS 250 - W928527
1996 ATV TRAIL BOSS - W968527

No luck finding anything other than the vin. The footrests do say Polaris on the side so I'm assuming that you're definitely on the right track.

How critical will it be to determine exact model, in order to move forward with this project?

Depends on what engine you plan on installing. If you stay with a Polaris 250/300 installation would be fairly easy. Also if the transmission is decent what you'd need is the engine, wiring harness, etc. You can find plenty of parts on ebay and craigslist as these were a couple of top selling machines for years and many year models could exchange parts.

Is something like this ridiculous to consider?
