I carry my Judge with alternating rounds (000Buck 3" mag/250 grn .45 colt) when travelling in bear country. It's inexpensive, and great for defense. Course that's black bear country, not griz, or kodiak...

If you have your heart set on a semi auto dont count out the 10mm. It can be loaded to 1500 fps. It can shoot a 200 grain bullet. And a glock can carry 13 rounds +1. A spare mag and some practice and 28 rounds will put a hurt on any 2 or 4 legged game I would think. You can also get a wolf barrel for a 1911 but will be limited to 8 rounds. I sure do love my 1911's.

I haven't read all the posts, but when I got to this one it made me laugh. I was probably 7 or younger the first time I shot my Dad's ruger super blackhawk. We used to help him re-load with the rock chucker too. Those were good times. My mom also had a .44 mag Marlin lever action saddle rifle. That was pretty cool too. We could use the same ammo for both.

These days, I have a Glock model 22c that I put a non-compensated barrel in as well as adding extended slide release, extended mag release, "butt plug", and a 3.5lb trigger. I also keep a remington 870 with a folding stock behind the bureau just in case.

And as an added measure of security, I have a 56lb female and 75lb male pit bulls. I don't think they would ever actually attack though, but I can hope. Chevy (the female, we got her first) actually started barking like crazy one night. My wife thought there was another black bear in the back yard or something so she turned on the light and a guy jumped up from behind the wood pile and went running. I got dressed as quick as I could and grabbed the dog and my glock, but I wasn't fast enough.

I went ahead and already bought this one. Ruger Redhawk 4". This one's a 45 colt but I bought the 44 mag caliber.

Please tell me why it made you laugh? I mean I could guess but I'd rather hear it from you. Thanks!

You can also target shoot the 44mag with 44special rounds. The 44 special rounds are some what less more $.

You can get yourself a good reloader too if you have the time.

We were out shooting the .44 yesterday (7.5" SuperRedhawk). We shot a bunch of different loads at big pieces of wood, then dug the different slugs out to see how they reacted to the impact. Pure fun!
