my dad has a 1984 trx 200 and i believe it is the same as you are talking about. there is a **** for the subtrasmission and reverse on the left side of the engine as you sit on the machine, correct? the farthest position towards the fron of the machine (again, as you sit on it) is high range, the middle selection is low range, and the farthest towards the rear of the machine is reverse. if this is the case, to engage reverse, start by being in neutral. then pull up on the ****, then pull it all the way to the rear, into the reverse selection. then, shift into gear, and you should be in reverse and the red reverse light should be lit on the dash board. i know the shift pattern on my dad's machine is downshift = upshift, which is the opposite of what manual machines are today, and when shifting into reverse, you also "downshift" to shift into gear.

hope this helps!
