185S ATC carb problems, help!

Has any one heard of of this?
I bought a used carb for a 83' 185s, rebuilt it, and now it runs good, but after the motor warms up the idle runs right up & stays revved right up. (reving it up with the throttle does this) I then turn the idle screw down & it idles down & conks out. It's like the slide is sticking or something, but I can't see how that would happen. The only thing(s) I have not tried is changing the position of the needle in the slide, and changing the throttle cable. The throttle cable seems to move back and forth fine though. This is such a simple carb I feel like a dummy because I can't get it to work properly! I am determined to fix the stupid thing though!!!!
Anybody have any suggestions, or heard of this? THANKS!!!

Yes I know exactly what's wrong with it and have fixed dozens just like it. You need (in Hondaspeak) a needle jet set. It includes the needle, clip, retainer and needle jet. The problem is the needle jet is just a brass piece and the hole in it wears too big with a lot of use, allowing too much fuel to leak by it at low speeds, makes it run too rich and fouls spark plugs very prematurely. You can even see this visually if you compare the old and new needle jets You could probably make it run better by leaning the needle clip position, but in my experience that's not quite right yet. Spend the 35$ on the OE parts and it'll run like a million.

Thanks so much,
Now when you say wears out, does the hole where the needle slides through in the carb wear out as well?
Or are you talking just the needle itself & the body in the the bowl section of the carb? (the part the main jet screws in to) I did get a carb rebuild kid, I guess it may not be the "jet set" you are taking about though.
It came with a new main jet, and a needle, gaskets etc. It did not come with a new body for the main jet though. I had to use the old one. Well, any additional is greatly appreciated, thank you very much!!!

Needle jet is the part that sits right above the main jet\emulsion tube assy. It's held in by the main jet\emulsion tube. It's about 12mm or so long. If you look in the carb from the back with the slide out, you should see it sticking out just a little into the carb venturi. You can't buy it separately, it comes with needle, clip and retainer, this is from Honda. Sounds like you bought an aftermarket carb kit. Throw that junk right into the trash, unless you don't mind adding to your problems. After all, they didn't even include the part that REALLY wears out in the kit. Sounds like they really did their homework. You can't buy a complete kit from Honda, except the gasket kit. All other parts are purchased separately. With few exceptions, the only parts you need to rebuild that carb (assuming you have a good soaking solution to get parts clean) are the gasket set and needle jet set.

Had the same problem with my old 85 ATC200S. After years of running great the carb stater to give me grief. I cleaned the jets, adjusted the float, cleaned all the passages and still had the same problem. It wasn't untill after I lowered the needle that it started to run better. That didn't make sence to me since I never before messed with the needle height. Now I know, I need to replace the "Jet Set". Thanks for the info.

I am trying to locate one of these 'needle jet sets' and I cant find them anywhere.
I did locate one locally for a 79',,,,,,where as mine is an '81. Is there a difference in these kits..??? The part numbers are different.
Any advice on where to find a kit?
My buddies XL185s is doing the same thing you guys are describing.
