Help on foreman front end
#1
A friend said he had a clicking coming from his 01 Foreman. When I looked under it saw the front diff vent hose off, needless to say his fluid was white. We drained and refilled it 4 times with 80 wt. gear oil. It said something about hydroscopic 80 wt oil. Does it really matter or is this something special? Second I noticed that the front tires rotate very hard (by hand) not familiar with Hondas. Is this normal? I checked brake adjustment. Any help would be great. Thanks

Hypoid gear oil should be used in this bike!As far as the clicking noise..When does it do it?Does it do it while turning? If so you got a CV fixing to give out on ya!
When trying to rotate the tires for brake adjustment,do you have all 4 tires off of the ground? If not you cant turn the tires, the bike is full time 4wd and all 4 tires must be off the ground!

He said the clicking was more when he was turning. I had never ridden the machine so do not have a before feel for it. I did not think it was that bad. Except for the water in the differential. Yes all four tires were off the ground, the left front seemed to be harder to turn. I am not sure how the differental operates on this machine.

Hypoid C and a bit of friction modifier is what I think it calls for. The clicking is the constant velocity joint and it may be ruined with him running the oil gear oil when it was contaminated.

Definantly bad CV joint, most likely caused by a bad CV joint boot that let in dirt and or water. Dirty differential oil would not affect a CV joint, but would adversly affect the operation of the differential.

Get the Belray hypoid gear oil it is for limited-slip and non slip differentials. The noise will be the clutches in the front differential. Once you get the right gear oil in it the noise will go away the more you ride it.

When I first notice the clicking on my 01, there was a tear in the right CV boot. I took it to Honda and told them it was clicking and that the boot was torn within an hour of when I heard the noise( I remember the tree branch . They replaced the boot. All was fine for awhile then the clicking came back. Took it back in to Honda and they replaced the wheel bearing. Well the noise is back again.
realize when the noise first appeared the machine had less than 200 miles on it although it was over a year old. It now has 400 miles on it and has never been submersed. It only makes noise in right hand hard turns.
Guess I will be rebuilding a CV joint Huh?

hello
on our 1998 foreman 450es i had the same noise and was all ready to buy a new cv-joint and i looked it over and found the front wheel bearings were shot . i bought the kit from piviot works ( had both the inner and outer seals and bearings for both sides ) much cheaper than from honda . no more noise and still running the origional cv-joints . just some food for thought
