There is no chain. It sounds like the clutch is slipping and needs adjusted.

My recon was doing the same thing, it would slip in the higher gears. All I had to do was adjust the clutch but also that is a sign of plate wear and it could need new clucth plates.

Yea, I think it is the clutch plates. I adjusted them by following the instructions in the book, but it didn't help at all. I think I may need new ones. How much will this cost to fix, and is there anything I could try to find out for sure that they need fixed.

Well as far as I'm aware of the only way to make sure the plates are worn is to tear into them and have a look at them. But since its a 97 and you tried ajusting it and that didn't work then chances are they need replaced. The plates aren't to expensive and you can get an EBC clutch kit for the recon too. Check out www.rockymountainatv.com and they carry them. The recon are known for having weak clutches and if driven hard they will wear out soon, so whenever my plates are gone I'm gonna get the clutch kit.

Ok.. well i think the whole clutch plate thing is whats messed up, BUT i've found an oil leak in the rear! Could this make everything wear faster, or even can this make it a more difficult thing to narrow down what all is wrong? I just replaced the clutch in our 2000 Recon, it cost $80, and I did the work myself.

Where is the oil leak, is it in the rear differential or in the rear of the engine? If it was in the diff. I dont think that would cause it to be slipping but you better get it fixed before you get water in there and ruin all the gears.
