400ex wide open problem
#1
I just recently installed a K&N Power Kit for my 00' 400ex and it has more power, but if i get in 5th gear and hold it wide open for more than about 10-15 seconds, it sputters and cuts off and will not fire back up unless I choke it and it doesnt really want to crank then. No other noticeable problems besides that and far as power goes, it doesn't feel as though it has lost any. Oh by the way, I have a K&N filter,Outerwear,
White Bros. Pro-Meg System, Main Jet 170 on 3rd Notch. I did not change the pilot jet but figure it may have something to do with it. Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Yeah it completely shuts off and I have to choke it to get it running again. Hitting the rev limiter wouldnt make it cut off though would it? It hasnt done it in any other gears, only pegged out in 5th. Thanks for the replies fellas.

well, the only reason i cna think of that would make it cough is that oyur still in gear and when your rolling its dragging the engine until you come to a stop, so maybe it wants to start up again,(ya know...like a dirtbike when you can pop the clutch to start it if our rolling) so my guess would be that it is trying to startbut something wont let it os it backfires.....this is jsut a thought....anyone out there want to correct me?
You shoudl try advancing the rev limited, and if that doesnt work, i dont knwo what will

ruffridaz....oyou got a point about the rev limiter not maknig it cmpletely shut off, because there so you cant keep reving it higher, so maybe its something else
because on my 300 trx when i hti the rev limiter it jsut keeps it from going any faster or reving any higher so.....

ruffridaz,
Read your plug...at sea level in SC you may still be lean regardless of what others may be running for a main jet. Forget the pilot jet. It's only affecting performance at idle to 1/4 throttle. Ditto the jet needle ..it is working in the 1/4 to 3/4 rpm part of the band. The nominal setting for the needle is in the center slot.
The fact that you have to close the choke tells you that you're not getting enough fuel for the air flow.

Put in a 168, if it continues, go down to a 165. Keep going down until it stops. Make sure the quad is warm, the filter is clean and the spark plug is clean and gapped correctly for proper jetting. Jetting can be a pain due to changing conditions. Hope this helps.
