Remove the fuel tank, spark plug, tappet covers, and inspection plugs on the left engine cover. Turn the engine over via the flywheel nut, and look for the F and the T marks in the smaller inspection window. You must find T on the compression stroke, there seems to be a lot of confusion about this. Here is a method for finding TDC compression on ANY four stroke. First, determine the correct engine rotation. You can do this by pecking the starter button and watching the flywheel nut, or use the F (fire) and T (TDC) marks. F always precedes T in engine rotation. Turn the engine over slowly the correct way, and watch the intake valve rocker open the intake valve, and then close it completely. The very next T is ALWAYS the compression stroke. Both valves should be closed completely. Loosen the tappet adjuster locknut and stick the correct size feel gauge between it and the valve stem. When you're done the feeler should fit snugly. Reinstall your parts and you're done.
