only reason the 4-strokes are doing so well in the points series is because the two strokes cant go above 265cc's, yet the thumpers are HUGE. thats one hell of a 250 class....cough cough.

mixing is gas is such a burden...the maintenance is soooo incredible pain staking! please guys!

Mixing gas is hard? What the heck are you anti-2 stroke guys smoking? I'm working on some euler uquations for my electrical engineering course.. Now that's hard. Hmm. 5 gal. gas/1 bottle oil. Yep - pretty hard.

Maintenance - hmm..

Change oil/coolant/spark plug/fuel filter/clean air filter every 3 months.
Lube chain/check tension before every ride..
Rebuild forks (on my ATC anyway) once a year..
Wash bike well after EVERY outing..
Maybe repack the spark arrestor every few years?

Isn't this the same on all bikes? What extra maintenance does a 250R have? Adjust the jetting/needle jet for optimum performance maybe? Where is the headache here?

I'll never give up my R'... Until I'm too old to ride it - then my boy can have it.

One question - now that I'm on to maintenance - Where can I get original honda red paint? I may be doing a complete restoration after this summer (my bike is still stock - except the head polishing) and will definately need to repaint the frame.

usually powder coating and sand blasting places can get VERY close to it. I dont know the code for it but i would call around. whole side of my fathers family has been in that business for over 20 years here. good luck

Extra maintenance=keeping front end down.

Just about any 250r is a good deal for 3500 and higher. Here in Oregon they are going any where from 3500 up to 10000. i here that in california stock ones are going for 6500. the one you are looking at is probably worth at least about 6500.

To answer the original question, I just bought a lightly modded 86 TRX250R because I've always wanted one since they were new. I've had a TriZ250, a 87 Warrior, a 01 400EX and a 01 Raptor all bought brand new, but I've just always wanted a 250R. Now that I've tried my hand at TT racing, it didn't take long to see that my Raptor is just too tall for that kind of racing, even with all the power it just won't hang with the 250Rs on a 1/4 mile oval.
I just picked up a 86 R and am loving it already. If Honda made one still I'd go buy a brand new one or two tomorrow.

I love it! Isn't this the truth! Try to get the front end of a huge four stroke up - maybe with a jack!

Both R's are great, If i was you.. i'd find a bike on ebay that is close to your area or semi close to be able to drive there and test the bike out, and maybe pick it up right there.

The top bike isn't that far from me, 1-2 hour drive.

The bottom bike is beautiful, seriously my dream bike.. And im sure he put more than what he's selling it for.. but who knows how it runs.
