The only friction modifier to worry about is molly and then only on a manual shift quad with a lot of time as the springs will be weaker.
rhinhd is correct in that all oils are the same just remember you do not have a lot of capacity and a small filter and ride in the worst conditions around so you get condensation, unburnt fule and dirt in you oil so no mater what oil you use it will get dirty long before it breaks down. I do disagree on sync oil though it is a beter lubricant but is it enough to really make a differance? only you can decide for me it is not others will run nothing else.

Synth Oil makes a difference in extremely modified motors like the ones found in dragsters, stock cars and F1 (my favorite)... And yes you absolutely correct dirt and water (condensation) are an engines worst enemy... Well, I will add my brother in-law to that list...

Just use the oil type and weight listed in your owner's manual and you won't go wrong. Avoid synthetic oils unless they are specifically recommended for your machine, unless you don't mind being a guinea pig. IE. I recently worked on a VT1100C (shadow) that had 6K trouble free miles. Immediately after the owner switched to Mobil 1, he began having bad engine noise when the machine got hot. New hydraulic lifters fixed the problem. Was it due to the Mobil 1? We may never know, suppose it could have been a coincidence. But the owner didn't think so as the problem showed immediately after changing, and hadn't been there before. On the Rincon, the motor oil is also the auto tranny oil so the weight vs. temp is important for the best tran performance. There should be a chart in your owner's manual with this information. Honda has a new 0-30 oil they are recommending for temps you have in the MI winter, and is good up to 70F!! according to the service manual.
