I purchased a lonestar twin row bearing carrier a few months ago. I did some research before I choose that one. Here is what I learned.
Tapered bearings are able to withstand a greater side load, are cheaper, and easier to get than the standard roller bearings. I talked to the people at lonestar to find out why they do not make a tapered bearing carrier. This is why. Tapered bearings have more resistance, and have a tendency to push dirt into the bearing while roller bearings are more likely to push dirt out. The lonestar people also said that with twin row roller bearings, you get four times the side load handling ability than the stock carrier. They said that this pretty well eliminates failure due to a side load.
Of course the guy from Lonestar may have been trying to sell his own product, but his explanation did seem reasonable to me.

I can go along with the Lonestar guys. I have run both types in GNCC racing and I will take a double roller over a taper any day for a couple of reasons. First, you lose some of your chain adjustability with the taper. Secondly, I was having to replace bearings in the taper about every two months due to the mud and water getting in the bearing. With the double row I replace them once a year and then it is only as a preventive measure.
