Default '02 Rubicon Trans Problem

I'm having trouble with the transmission on my 2002 Rubicon.

In the D1-D2 mode, the transmission locks up in 5th gear after about 10 minutes of riding.
When this happens, the transmission LED display starts flashing D1 and it wont downshift.
Switching the **** to ESP does nothing...
I have to shut the engine off and restart it and then everything works fine for a few more minutes.

I called the dealership service dept., and they suggested changing the oil... I did that but it still happens..

Anyone have any ideas what might cause this?

Thanks.
Jamie

ps.. It has 365 miles, 53 hours

fastmudder,

its more than likely the shifting sensor. a guy i ride w/ has had to put three in his. his has about 2000 mi on it though. another guy i ride w/ only had about 100 mi on his when his went out. ive heard alot of guys having problems w/ that. not saying thats what wrong w/ yours for sure but its pretty close to the same symptoms anyway. just a thought.

The rubicon is actually for "slow mudding"...

Called the dealer where I bought it, and they had no idea what would cause it... They said "maybe a pinched wire"..
But they would be more than happy to look at it for 63 bucks an hour...

Called another Honda dealer, and he said he never heard of a Rubicon Trans doing that either.. He suggested looking through a service manual..

From what everyone tells me, the transmission of the Rubicon is bulletproof.. they haven't had any problems like what mine is doing...

Lucky Me...

How many miles do you have on the machine? Do you have oversize tires? The reason I am asking these questions is because I have seen alot of Rubicons with the centrifical clutch shoes and drum burning up.# 1 reason is from using D2.The other is oversize tires and using high range when you should be using low.
The angle sensor is also a problem. You can check for problem codes by turn the key on and holding down both shift buttons for about 2 seconds and then release, press them together again and release. If there is an error code it will start flashing the problem code. I think the angle sensor is (6) flashes. I would have to check the book on that to be sure. I hope this will help you.

I'll try what you said to see if it brings up a code...
