what do you guys think is a better choice in a new quad. I can get a brand new 400ex for 2900 or should i look for a used z. i have found many z's for 4500-5000 with mods. I have rode the z and loved it. major improvement over my warrior. i have never rode a ex before so i cant compare. i was setting up my warrior for xc but i realized that even if i raced in a beginner class the warrior still isnt worth modding in a major way. is the honda still worth having + modding.

the 400ex is far more reliable than a warrior and a Z. for the money you saved from buying a 400ex, you can put suspention and engine mods in it, and waste a Z. a 400ex has proven reliability. it will not hold its re-sale value as well as a Z tho. Liquid cooling isnt a big deal, because it is just one more thing to worry about breaking, you can just put air scoops on the EX. dohc isnt anything to worry about. a pipe, filter, jet kit, no lid 400ex, is faster than a Z. it all boils down to how heavey your pockets are and what your favourite color is.

but i really think you should get the 400ex. im not bias at all.

but will a honda holds its own with the same mods against a z in a race. i dont care about top speed i want the one better for xc racing - power+handling - and the one better for trails. i like the more power/reverse/and liquid cooling of the z but for some reason i just cant fully decide which one to get.

you said you can get a new 400ex for $2900. I would buy the ex, with the money your saving you can put it in to the ex and a z will not be a problem.

That's a good deal for the 400ex.

If it was me, I'd probably pay the extra cash and get the Z. It looks much better and also has reverse if that matters.

As far as reliable goes...any quad can be reliable as long as you take care of it.

For the price difference I might be tempted into getting the ex. There power is comparable stock not a major major difference. The z has a little more and a lot more potential with mods but man that ex at half the price of the z is hard to pass up. I think the z does look quite a bit better and the reverse is something I will not do without. I think a trail quad no matter what should have reverse. I watched my cousin on an ex slip in a hole in a creekbed on slate rock and he isn't real strong (he's fairly young, 14) and he could not get it out by himself. I walked over and picked it up out of there for him and then ragged on him a minute. To tell the truth though I wouldn't have got out of that hole with reverse either but it was funny. I think the z is a better overall quad but I couldn't pass up that deal on the ex I don't think.

both good quads, very good price on the ex.

I have a Z and my friend has an ex, both have the same mods.(pipe, K&N air filter no lid)
drag racing I beat him every time, 2-3 quad links. We trade and he beats me by 1/2 to 1 quad lengths.
I am in 4th gear reved out at the end of the drag strip.
I am an experienced rider, he is not the greatest. But it proves that the Z is faster.

The ex has more low end torque the flatens out, the Z has a powerband feel, and revs more freely.

tomorrow we are puting a stage 2 hotcam in his ex, give me a couple of days and I can tell you the results.
