The manual says kerosene/solvent(which I don't have)Can I just use soapy water?

I do have a K&N Filter cleaning kit for my motorcycle, anyone think that would be ok?

What I have heard is that a solvent will just disolve the oil, and LEAVE THE DIRT BEHIND. From my experience, I think this is true! So, I have always used soap on foam filters. I prefer PJ1, but some people just use dish detergent.

i just use warm water and dish soap in the sink....swish it around, the crud comes right out.
squeeze carefully, rinse, squeeze carefully again, and let dry. then oil, and reinstall.

be careful about using really flammable stuff like kerosene, it can bite ya!

I use K&N cleaner and PJ1 oil. Don't use K&N oil on Honda's foam filter; it won’t keep the dirt out. K&N filters aren’t foam. The throttle body in our carburetor has stayed very clean.

Derrick,

I do what my pop did - take the filter and a shallow pan outside on the gravel and clean the heck out it with gasoline. It dries super fast then oil it up.

If you are outside nowhere near a spark and you don't smoke, there are no worries. Been doing it this way since the 70s. Just be cautious - if you are, it won't hurt anything. The Bultaco was my dad's and it's in perfect shape.

Can use soap if you want but it takes a while to dry.

Cheers!

Marci

Several years ago I had a foam air filter. My word of advice is to NEVER, EVER use brake cleaner or alcohol on a foam filter!!! Found this out really quickly the hard way!!.. unless of course you want your filter to fall apart in your hands!! Whoops! Oh well... I feel better with K&N filters anyhow!

I always just used starter fluid or carb. cleaner and the air hose to clean mine.....using water waist time, 'cause you have to wait for it to dry, with the starter fluid you can just put it back on a ride right soon after

From my experience from using gas on foam filters after a while the gas starts to eat the glue that holds the filter together.
