Ridley,
How are the YZ426/450 engines holding up in the race quads? Most desert racers I know who have built quads using the Yamaha engines replace the valves right away. They say the titanium doesn't hold up which I thought was odd.
When it comes to the custom mx quads based on the YZF / CRF, what would you say is the breakdown between engines that are being used today? I would guess it overwhelmingly Honda since you can buy the CRF in crate form and the YZF you can't.
These engines are built to run on the edge of high performance and reliability IN A BIKE. To take it one step further, they aren't meant to be reliable for any lenght of time without mandatory upkeep. I think it is unfare to say that Honda should correct the "pitiful reliability", they did not release this motor to be used under the stresses of a race quad. In fact, the CRF is the more "fragile" of the 2 designs as is evident by comparing the service requirements and recommendations. So if they are stock as you say, one SHOULD expect more problems. Yamaha did the right thing in beefing up the gears, clutch and lowering the compression, Honda will have to do the same AND MORE to keep up with the YFZ in stock form.
Because you are a regular on the racing circuit, you should know that what you have to say carries alot of weight here. However, don't let your anti-Honda bias cloud what could be otherwise useful information.

i'm sure everyone has seen this by now but here is some hard evidence from todays press release.
it should make things interesting and the choices a little clearer. Seems like they are addressing the engine concerns as well. I just hope they dont jack with it too much and suck too much power out of it.
