Rubicon tranny broken
#1
I was riding down the dirt road a few hours before work today and was going about 35mph in 5th gear, went into a corner and started up a hill so I down shifted into 4th gear and all of the sudden it started making some bad noises and I could hear gears grinding from the tranny. I could only get it to move in 5th gear all of the others it would just grind and if I hit the gas hard it will grind and strip things out in high gear too. It does this in hi/lo, reverse, and in all drive modes. has anyone had a mechanical tranny problem yet. I will be taking it to honda in the morning for warrenty work. I had 3968 miles when I started the day, hopeing to get to 4k miles on the bike, the trouble started at 3995 miles and I parked it with 3998 si I might go ahead and try to break 4k before I take her in tommorow. I think I am giving honda a bad name fast for breakdowns, 3 in 10 months ,the bike is only 2 years and three months, broke front diff, then back axle and diff, and now this. They are very reliable up to 3k and I would have never had any problems if I drove like a normal person.

Well I beat that you have either a 2000 or a 2001 500 which sounds like you have a bad tranny caused by lack of oil pressure caused by a bad oil pump. the noise that your getten is the pistons in the tranny (cause it's a hyro like set up) ratching inside. Have your dealer so a oil pressure test then if you don't have the extended warrenty have them call Honda anyways they may still cover this problem. I work at a Honda deal and have done aleast 6 or more of this for the same deal.

Cluby, is this problem limited to only the 2000 & 2001 models? I have a 2003 and the factory warrany is about to run out and I'm wondering is I should get the extended warrany? Thanks for any advice!

yes haven't seen any more in the new model years not saying that it cann't happen. I would say buy the warrenty good selling point if you deside to sell it down the road. And if for some reason the ECM (computer) go out it's like 500.00 for that. Covers the same as regular warrenty. Have to buy before the 6 months of warrenty is up though
