no the maintenance on either carbs won't be an issue. they both stay true to thier jetting .

 

You could but you would be assuming wrong. The 39FCR was the greatest carb for a 4-stroke around until the 40FCR that comes on the CRF450. If Honda would have put the 40FCR on the 450r and bumped the price up 500 bucks to cover it that would have made the bike far and away better. Instead they were able to sell it for less than the YFZ(300 less) but they had to cut costs and the easiest place to do that was with putting a low cost CV carb on it. The bore and stroke and everything else that they changed on the 450r doesnt mean that the 40FCr wouldnt have been the perfect carb for it. We put FCR's on all our thumpers because they work so well. 400ex's become monsters with a FCR and a new cam and the same goes for the Z's. I was disappointed in the CV carb choice to say the least.

I imagine it will be similar to the carb used on a 400EX or 300EX - which are NOT CV carbs like what's used on Raptors, LTZs, DS650s, and utility quads. They are a conventional carb with an accelerator pump and a cable acutated butterfly and slide. A CV carb acutates the slide with vacuum.

True - the 42mm butterfly carb will likely not be as good as an FCR, but a 40mm FCR can be bought for about $330 from Servicehonda, so getting one swapped in should be a non-issue to any enthusiast.

I have a 39mm FCR on my 400EX and while I love the thing - I have been beat in the straight line by stock carbed machines. The main advantages of the FCR are throttle response, a little more bottom (strangely enough), and the adjustments it allows you to make on the thumb throttle.

I wonder if they used this carb to get the green sticker? Does the YFZ get a green sticker? Either way, it's an easy situation to correct [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

 

In defence of Ridley...he isn't an arrogant know-it-all...simply a know-it-all...I believe arrogance is part of that personality trait.

 

Wrong - if you had any real experience with a 400EX, 300EX, 350X, 250X, or any of a number of other 4 stroke Honda's that sport a Keihin carb, you'd know that the slide is DIRECTLY acutated by the cable and nothing else.

I will agree that CV carbs suck, but you're mistaken if you think these various Hondas are equipped with CV carbs.
