help a yamaha guy out here.....
at work (car dealership) they have a 2000 400ex for sale. it has the factory set of rims with original bald front tires and brand new maxxis XC(?) rear tires plus a nearly new set of dirt track racing tires, front and rear, mounted on red aluminum bead lock wheels (the owner claims he paid 1000 bucks for the wheels and tires not long ago). it has some type of steering stabilizer on the front, a nacs seat cover and it must have an aftermarket clutch because the lever is pretty hard to pull. the front plastic and headllight look decent, the rear fender is cracked and has been put back together with tie straps. i think it had aftermarket front and rear bumpers too. plus some kind of chain guide that was aftermarket, amongst other things i am forgetting. it has been used for flat track racing as it still has the number on it and has a kill switch tether thingy mounted to the handlebars. what would this be worth? i think i can get it for 1500 bucks. that's a good deal right? i rode it tonight before i left and it seemed to run good, was kinda hard to get in neutral but otherwise seemed fine. i don't know what they usually run like but it definitely wasn't going to be challenging my raptor any time soon. it's cheap enough that i'm thinking about buying it just to have an extra wheeler and for something for my nephews to ride. whaddaya think?

i would think if it runs good, then it idles good, how is it when you ride it, does cut or backfire or anything? if it doesnt run good than that can always be fixed, i doubt there is anything seriosly wrong with it. i would think for 1500 bucks for a 400ex thats pretty good, but is it beat up and does it look like crap? but let me know when you rode it if it did anything strange, did it idle high or low? it sounds like its got alot of goodies on it.

Sounds to me like it has been abused pretty badly and may end up being one of those that you have to work on all week to ride on the weekend. And then will end up cutting your weekend short. That gets to be old real fast. With all the goodies you listed, and you can get it for 15 bills, I would part it out on Ebay. You should be able to make your money back and then some.
As for the clutch, it sounds like the cable may need replacing or they may have installed an extra clutch plate in there to get it to stop slipping.
Just don't depend on it to be any thing short of a headache in the long run. I speak from experience. Best wishes in what you choose to do, though.

i dunno it's pretty beat up. i think i'm gonna pass but if i had 1500 bucks just laying around i know it'd be worth it. it started and idled excellent and didn't smoke a bit but man that thing did NOT want to pull a wheelie in first very badly, never mind the others. i hope for you 400ex riders that something was wrong with it. seemed to run smooth, just no beans. thank you all very much for your help though.
