Is this true about the 450R??

My friend works at a honda dealer in the parts department. He claims a Honda rep came in and was telling them how the 450r is strictly a race quad and to top it off youre only suppose to get about 30 hours out of a top end. I would think that is if youre racing the ***** off of it non stop then youll only get 30 hours out of it. Does anyone own a CRF to confirm this.

That is true about the cr450 dirtbike Its sounds about right but the honda rep told me its not the same motor and it has 3 piston rings instead of 2 and the compression was going to be differant so it would need less rebuilds oh yeah and it has some more breathers for the motor than the db version, but hey im just a saleman at a dealership nobody will know till there out.

Im just tryin to figure out if its worth it cause i dont wanna do top end rebuilds, thats one of the reasons i want to sell my R. I prefer the regular maintainence of a 4 stroke like oil changes air filter etc. so if this 450r turns out to be a 2 stroke in disguise then i dont want any part of it.

Don't worry about it!
The CRF450r says to replace the piston every 18 hours or so...this isn't the case
What is recommended at what is done are totally different...We have freshened up a few CRF dirtbikes and all could have gone at least twice as long on the piston set(they brought them in after a year and a half of racing)
Don't worry about reliability...its still a Honda
Will it outlast a 400ex...I doubt it.
The machine will need a quality upkeep...but not a top end every ride

The 450R won't be for the average Joe, it'll require some TLC and will be for the do it yourselfer if you have the know how's or a big pocket book.
The people who just ride the hell out of there 400ex and just always jump on it and go and never do any work on there quad won't like or perhaps even beable to afford a 450R.
I've talked to alot of people about the new 450R that own 400ex's now and 90% of them want a new 450R but only about 10% of them can keep there 400ex in good running order.
I can see a big piston 99mm, lighter stator (no need for lights), cam, and NOS hidden of course and very stock looking.

So, I am wondering if I will be better off just waiting for a 650EX??? I have no problem riding the Z for another year. But as we all know, you can grow old waiting for Honda! I probably won't buy a 450 until it has been out a while and we get some feedback about the bike. The Baja 1000 should be interesting!!

Well, i would do all the maintainence myself, im an auto mechanic by trade. As for my riding style its mainly a sandy powerlines track with some nice berms and straightaways and maybe some trails and i may join an off road park and do some recreational track riding but nothing serious no racing. So i figure to get more than 30 hours out of a top end. The stuff i ride and the amount i ride, it will probly never have to be broken down. If i buy this thing i want it to be mint and all original 15 years down the line so itd be like finding a mint 250r right now. It will be taken care of in every aspect. I just want to make sure im putting $6500 in the right spot. I have an 85 350x that is in excellent running order it starts in 1-3 kicks and idles sweet, so i think that maintainence isnt a problem, like some people with the 400ex's mentioned above.
