Default Is this true about the 450R??

What is a typical Baja 1000 time?? I am guessing something like 20+ hrs?????? So, the bike should be ready for a top end then, by the end of the race. I am going to be reluctant to get a 450 if it needs top ends that often!! I want an engine that is dead solid reliable and DURABLE for hundreds of hours, like the XR650. On the other hand, if the TRX450 frame/handling is incredible, it might be worth the frequent rebuilds?????

400EX's can still do well in desert endurance races because they are so reliable, while the competition falls by the wayside. I will also be interested to see what the Z440's are going to do at Baja. Is a bored out Z440 going to be more durable than a TRX450??? Hope somebody enters a YFZ, just to keep things interesting. And the old 250R's aren't dead yet either.

I would think that is if youre racing the ***** off of it non stop then youll only get 30 hours out of it. Does anyone own a CRF to confirm this.

I can't see how this would be remotely true. From what i hear, Honda is offering an extended warranty with the quad. If the 450r needed a rebuild every 30 hrs, you would hardly ever get to ride and the quad would always be in the shop. With Honda's reputation for reliability, I can't see the 450r not holding up like the rest of the product. I'm sure enough that I am trading in my 400ex mid January for a new 450r.

well I do work at a honda shop. and the dirtbike does "recomend" the top end get rings somewhere in the visinity of 30hrs and it says so right in the manuel. The 450r atv has an additonal piston rin than the dirt bike 450 motor there are also diferant breathers in the atv motor, they did this to make it a reliable motor and require less maintance and also compensate for the heavier machine. But these are the things im told I dont work for honda just at a honda dealer.

Hmmm....Banshee's aren't worth the trouble....and if this is true about the 450R then it won't be worth the trouble either.

Alright, saying that it might be true about needing a top end rebuild. How bad are top end rebuilds or what costs might be involved. I have not many mechanic skills, but I like to figure things out and I am sure there are books that explain.

Maybe somebody will have some good insight on this. Is it worth doing yourself or paying to have it done, and how bad is it?
