Have any of you tried to winch yourself by putting a rope around your axle and then tie it to a tree and start to go backwards...it gets you out of the mud just like a winch!!

I have a come-a-long to pull me out when I get stuck.

Your idea is different, it might work.

Sorry to tell you but your idea was thought of a few years ago. I have seen it in the dennis kirk catalog called the axle winch I think. Great idea though, and cheap!!!!!

Yes yamahon and stevie you just tie one end of the rope to your axle and wrap it around a couple of times so it doesn't slip on the axle then tie it to a tree, then give it about a quarter to a half throttle and you should be pulling yourself out...I actually thought of it on my own, I never heard of it before.

And snowshark my friend put his rope around the tire and made it wrap around, is that what you did??

I had to think about this twice because I wasn't picturing what tree you would pick to tie the rope to; the tree in front of you or the tree behind you? Let me explain. My quad only goes forward, no reverse gear. I immediately thought that I would be tying the rope to the tree behind me because that is the location of my axle. However, if you think about it, your tires would be turning forward while you were being pulled backwards. So, if you simply take the rope, tie it to the rear axle then drag it under the quad to the front and tie it to a tree in front of you, your tires would be going in the same direction as the quad. Phew! I know all of you are probably much smarter than I and picked up on this, but I just had to put it in writing. Remember, though, I stated the fact that I didn't have reverse. If I had reverse, I could just tie the rope to the tree behind and the tires would be going in the same direction as the quad was being pulled. With all this said, think about it though, if your intention is to get out of the mud hole, it really doesn't matter where the rope is tied, regardless if you have reverse or not. Your tires are already slipping and would not really hinder your quads ability to pull itself out of the hole. WITH THAT SAID, most people got stuck in the hole to begin with because they wanted to go through it. So, now your intention is to not just get out of the hole, but to get to the correct side of the hole too Tie the rope to the rear axle, drag it under the quad to the front and tie it to a tree ahead of you. If there does not appear to be a tree available, pound that spike you always carry with you into the ground and tie the rope to the spike. This will be sure to get you to the other side of the hole. Oh, hope you brought some extra boots and pants, you'll need those too

ATV Man,

I have never done or heard of the "axle" winching method until this post. Heh, if it works then I can take that 5 pound come-a-long off my quad! Thats what these forums are all about, sharing info & ideas

sounds like a good way to strip some gears. wouldnt it be pullin you backwards when your wheels are pulling forward?
