Default 6-speed tranny for 400EX???

the power a 400ex has nothing to do with whether or not it can pull 6th gear. You can give it 50 gears, and if geared properly it will pull it without a problem.

But no, its impossible to put a 6th gear in a 400ex tranny. The engine wasnt engineered to do that. Thus, not enough room

I'm assuming were talking about a gear higher than the already existing 5th. In this case, No there would not be enough power.

It has plenty of power to pull higher gear. I rev mine out on top end and I look for another gear sometimes on those wide open spots

I'm sure that we have all looked for another gear (because we want more speed), but trust me there would have to be a huge run in order for you to even try putting it in 6th gear. I don't even know why this thread exists you can't even put a 6th gear in it. But if you want to know what it would be like to have another gear, put a 16 tooth front sprocket on and tell me then that you have enough power to pull it.

Overdrive simply means that the sprocket would be turning more RPM's than the crankshaft.

Over-drive is just that. Over (as in higher) than the drive gear (which is 1:1) So anything higher than 1:1 is over-drive. Even .99:1 is an overdrive.

A 6 speed could be helpful because it gives a slightly larger arrangement of gears. Even if the 6th gear isn't higher than the current 5th gear on the 400. You can have more gears in between what you have now, sorta.

I'm pretty sure it is with the 300EX/250X, and reverse has to be removed for the 6th gear to fit.

orignally i was talking about putting a new tranny on. i didn't think that there would be enough space in the existing tranny to add another gear. thanx for the info.
