Well since you said you want a quad that will not break down that knocks the sportsman out of the running was it even a competition in the first place.

Outlaw Rancher,

I have owned a Sportsman 500HO and now own a Honda Rubicon. I sold the Sportsman for two reasons: #1 - Reliability and #2 - It was not fun.

The Sportsman is fast and the IRS is awesome. But the quad is just too darn heavy and was not reliable on long rides. The 500HO engine is solid, but too many things broke on the quad.

The Rubicon is a very solid machine. It rides like a truck and is not fast, but it is FUN to ride (as with most Hondas I have had the pleasure of riding).

You will have more fun and reliability with the Forman S. I have a '98 and the only things I've replaced have been 2 front wheel bearings. I do alot of hard riding and alot of nud riding and this bike has never left me stranded.

Things I'd reccommend to upgrade:

Front locker - spool (little harder steering but cheap, or detroit locker - automatic and easier steering)
Upgrade tires - 27" will fit on stock rims and suspension with no clearance issues
If the bike is 2001 or newer it will have selectable 2-4wd, if older install a warn 424 unit
a-arm skidplates
Winch
Front Rear Bumpers
