rubicon carb heater: starting in cold weather
#1
thought i'd share this new procedure for starting the rubicon when the weather is below 20 degrees (F). last year i relied on the primer to inject fuel - incidently, the user's manual doesn't go into detail on cold starting, other than to say 'use the primer.'
based on what i've learned on this forum, and lots of trial and error, here's what i noticed:
- turn the ignition on and wait for approximately 45 seconds. the carb heater (not sure who informed me in this forum - but THANKS!) seems to work best when you let it heat up for more than 30 seconds.
- apply full choke
- tweak the throttle quickly (i usually hit the throttle 1/4 way toward full throttle)
- hit the starter while applying a small amount of throttle (about 1/8 toward full throttle)
the rubi starts after about 15 seconds
this method works great - far better than using the primer. but i assume i'll be using the primer when the temp falls below 0 degrees (F).
if anyone knows more about this carb heater, please let me know - i'd like to know how long it takes the carb to heat up - seems to me that it takes around 30 seconds, longer when it's colder.
thx!

This got me thinking so
I looked thru the shop manual, and theres not alot of specific infomation.Theres a themo switch, in series with the carb heater, but it dosent say at which temperature the switch closes at.
I wonder where the thermo switch is at, if its on the motor, then when the motor warms up it would turn off the carb heater, if its on the frame then the carb heater would be on all the time on a cold day.
