Rancher,
Drum brakes are usually very poorly sealed, therefore debree and water can enter the drum area very easily. It is not just a Honda problem either.I had a 87 KQ and went thru so many brakes that I should have took stock in the damn things.I now have disk brakes and no longer am faced with that problem any longer.

The brake seals leak and debree and water just hangs around inside the drum and contaminates everything in site.

After a good day in the mud,I
'd allways remove the drums and spray all my drums/brakes down with the garden hose until they are clean.Go to you auto parts store and purchase a bottle of any brand of brake and parts cleaner, spray all the brakes and drums off with this stuff after your done washing them with the garden hose.Use compressed air to blow dry all the drums and brakes down.Purchase some ''waterproof grease'' and use it on all the rubber seals upon re-installion of the drums.Stay out of muddy situations as much as possible or purchase a quad with disk brakes to prevent this from happening further.Best of luck,===Bill

Better check my brakes also, nothing to do this weekend since I don't get to ride.

Is there any special type of grease/silicone, brand wise, to help seal these brakes?

Snowshark,
ask for WATERPROOF GREASE at any of your local auto parts.Be careful to make sure all the seals are in place and clean upon installation.Good luck,===Bill
