400ex/250r axle
#1
ok are 400ex and 250r axles the same length? and they are both wider than the 300ex's right? does anybody know how much wider they are? I was thinking could probably put on a used 400ex or 250r axle on my 300ex to make the rear wider. does anybody know if it will fit? it should shouldn't it? if anybody has done this let me know what they thought of it. thanks

I know that the rear bearings that the axle sits in are the same for the 400/300/R. Obviously the R/400 axles are wider so I don't see why it wouldn't work. But the R has a smaller brake disc, so I wonder if the bolt pattern for the brake disc is different than that of an EX. Another thing you need to look at is the width of the swing arm. Your sprocket and brake discs might not sit in the right spot if the swing arm widths are different. I'm interested to see if it works out. Reply after you find out. I would think you would have more of a chance mating a 400's axle, but you never know.

yea it will probably work. I just wonder how much wider it would be. cause I think the 400ex is only 2in widder than the 300ex. I know I can get one pretty cheap cause there are two on ebay right now. I might not ad anything else to my 300ex cause this guy is selling his 2000 400ex or $4000.I figure I can get $3500 for mine. so anyways thanks

The swingarm width is the same between the 400EX and 250R, can't remember about overall width.
The 400EX and 300EX share the same splines, I believe, which are different than a 250R. 400EX axles are available shiny and new from Honda for about $80 where a 300EX axle is about $200. The only problem I can see is if the swingarm width isn't correct (I don't believe it is). You may have to use a 400EX rear sprocket as well.
Good luck.
