TO HELMET, OR NOT TO HELMET THAT IS THE QUESTION
#21
We often ride with a large group, when we first started riding with them nobody wore a helmet except us (my wife and I - she insisted). Yes, I felt like the oddball at first, but eventually it was fine - and as a side benefit I noticed that thorns, branches, etc on the trail were not so much of a problem as they bounced off my helmet.
As we took part in more and more rides, we noticed more helmets showing up, eventually my closest friends all starting pulling theirs out and it has continued to spread. It was like the others started to question themselves when they saw us with a helmet. Nobody ever said anything negative to us about wearing one, except for "That's probably a pretty good habit to get into." Anyway, the point is that you too can start a new trend - if not for you, then maybe you can help a friend or family member avoid a possible serious injury.
My decision to wear one came as I was walking through a nursing home. You expect to see ederly people there, but one day I saw a young guy, low 20's, nice looking kid. I asked what happened to him. He was a college student, was about to finish his law degree when he had an accident which resulted in a head injury.... he now sits in a wheelchair, a vegetable, drooling on himself and unable to do anything for himself. Wear the helmet, it's not a matter of being cool, it's a matter of being smart.

I can't believe that you would even consider not wearing one....speed has nothing to do with it....my wife is a nurse and she comes home all the time with stories about closed head injuries....I would not want to spend 50 years as a drooling vegetable...

i viewed that picture just the other day and as soon as i started reading this post i was tempted to post it, its the verry ugly harsh reality of not wearing a helmet,
personaly i have had a few slides down the road thankfully with leathers and helmet, most notable was a 50-60 meter slide that ended up with me stopping outside my house, my misses was in the window and saw it all i shudder to think my wife and son could have seen me sliding down the road leaving my face and brains in my Wake,
