Well, I was surfing the HMF Website....

And I was looking for a pipe for my buddies EX. It's got a mildly built stock bore motor, and it says the HMF Slip On works best with built motors. Is this true and how loud are the HMF Slip On's if any of you have delt with them?

I just put an HMF slip-on on my Z, I like it. It's alittle on the loud side, but also got some more power, the throttle response is pretty impressive. They sell a quiet core you can put in, for like $35 x-tra.

HMFs are loud. Real loud.Have your buddy look into a Yoshimura slip on. They are on the pricey side, but they give good gains on a mildly built motor, the quality is second to none, and they have a nice low rumble to them that is not overly loud.

I have never heard anyone say a slip on is BETTER for a mildly built motor. I have read where numerous engine builders have said that the stock header gives great flow for a stck header, and that an aftermarket header is not needed.
I have heard of 400EX owners grinding out the header welds. If you look down the header pipe, where it meets the cylinder, you'll notice rather large weld beads.

From what I have been reading the stock head pipe on the 400 is very good. If you go to a bigger carb , then the headpipe needs to be changed. Taking the welds out will give you about 1/2 hp increase + or -.

All you have to do is go to the 400EX Page on www.hmfengineering.com and look at the full system. The last tidbit on that states that the slip on is the best for built motors.
