i was posed with same question you have to weight out the qualities in both as there both awesome machines,,,the 400ex fit me most and being what i wanted to do there are the options to do so....flip a coin if you really cant make up ur mind.,lol there both equally good....

The first four wheeler I ever rode was a 400ex. I loved it. It was quick, and responsive. But that was five years ago. Now, when I look at the suzuki, I see that Honda was hasty and should have put more into it. The first time I got on the suzuki, I knew it was going to be a fun ride. It handled like a dream. The clutch like you asked had already been broken in, and was smooth. Now, when I compare the two of them, I would pick the suzuki. Also, the suzuki is liquid cooled, very nice. I don't now about the frame though.

I own a z400 and a 450r.the z400 is a great all around bike it has great low end , a good mid range and top end. it has a very plush ride and is a good jumper. the seat is very soft and the ergos. are great. I have a pro circuit full exhaust , pro flo kit k&n 170 main jet,no air box lid. the z runs pretty strong.
