Is it ok to use automobile motor oil in your quad???

Gimpster,
First you say don't use auto oils and go into a long schpeal about why (most reasons listed are from obvious neglect, not oil type) and then say use an oil specified by the manufacture of the machine... well, most car oils exceed the requirements.
If you have to feel comfortable paying extra for a picture of a MC on the oil bottle, great, but don't try and "scare" people into believing they have to as well. It's pretty obvious a lot on this board (and others) are easily influenced.... especially with doom and gloom compared to common sense... but that is how it's done these days...

Sounds like he works for the stealership....bottom line, auto oils (except energy conserving 5w-30 and 10w-30) are at LEAST as good as the oil available for twice the money at the stealership. This has been beat too death in the past, on this board extensively, with tests by professionals and professional opinions.

seperate engine and trans/gear case.
centrifical clutch tho......
on the other hand honda did slpit the case (seperate engine /trans ) in their CR450 R dirt bike
it resulted in less than 1 quart of oil in the engine , that is scarry.

WHats scary about it? Most two strokers have capacity of around a quart and we know the power they generate compared too a 4 stroke. Separate engine and transmission oil is a great thing.

now you are comparing apple to orange.
1 qt oil you must be talking about a trans oil. or if for some reason the engine would have oil it would be outside the crank and piston area, meaning carbons would not contaminate the engine oil.
2 stroke use premix or oil injection. there is a bottle for the injection oil.

Just so you guys know. For those of you switch from standard oil to a full synthetic be careful to flush your motor with some Seafoam or some kind of engine flush treatment. Standard oil and synthetic don't mix well and will kinda be like oil and water if you know what I mean.

THis is BS as well.... Another one I waiting for is it will make your engine leak..... Anyone?.......
I have run Delo 400 15w40 FOREVER in EVERYTHING I own, never has an enging/trans/clutch failure yet. I will be changing to Mobile one Synth. in the YFZ though because it runs EXTRA hot.

I ran castrol and valvoline in my 96 honda 300ex for 5 years, i say 5 years, and never had a problem. I rode it hard and it never slipped or smoked. Also i worked at Mobile Oil in Beaumont Texas for a while in there B&P plant, (blending and packaging). And they produced oil for Yamaha and Honda . They used there Automobile oils , that were put into Yama and honda quart bottles with only a slight difference in the engredients, the engredients were the same, just in slightly different quantities. The actuall blenders at there plant told me that it was basically the same oil, and that it had only been produced to Yama or honda specs which were basically the same as there own. They said that they added a small amount more or less of certain engredients, but if you changed your oil promplty that you would have no Probs. And i never did. These days i do use factory labled oils in my machines , motorcycles-ATV mostly just for Warranty reasons. I do not use synthetic, it is no better only may last a little longer, but i change my oil at scheduled intervals anyway so i dont need the extended life of a synthetic. Which really isnt much longer than a traditional oil anyway. If you feel comfortable with auto oil just make sure you get a good brand and weight, and like the other guys said pay attention to the little circle in the back.

All the people that are having problems with their quads that smoke: I question if you know how to do a proper break-in.
If you don't, try this thread. This artical should be required reading for anyone that buys an internal combustion engine. Some people will not agree with him, but I do!!!!

If you do, there is such a thing as a "friday" built quad. Look at all the problems people have right off the showroom floor. (Not many, but they do happen.)
One last thing, for all the people that use Rotella in anything that you own, and change their oil like they should, I would not hesitate to buy anything you own.
