Is it ok to use a motor oil like castrol gtx 10w-40? I have heard of a lot of people using this. Will it be ok or not. Or do you guys recommend honda only? Thanks for any info.

You don't have to use Honda oil, but yes you should use an oil that is formulated for motorcycle/atv engines. Using oil for autos will eventually damage your engine (it will not last under the torture of a small high reving engine). I personally like the Castrol.

AS long as the oil has JASO on it. Then it is ok.

I would'nt use regular automotive oils, they will protect your engine just fine, but just like FarmStud said they can cause your clutch to slip. I prefer Motul, but any oil made for motorcycles will work fine.

Keep in mind that with an atv motor the oil is used for your clutch and tranny. Automobile oil is not formulated for that.

what about in a liquid cooled belt drive auto? engine temp stays with-in a certain temp and there are no clutches internaly. not sure the difference between that and a auto motor. I always use yamalube but often wondered about the difference? motor oil for cars is under $ 2.00 a quart and yamalube is$ 3.75

this is what the local honda shop tells use to run. but you can run almost any oil as long as it doesn't have friction modifiers.if you look at the bottle of oil it will have a ring on the back. in the middle of the ring it will say the weight of the oil. on the top of the ring it will have API service code. now the good part. on the bottom of the ring it will either be blank or will say "friction modifiers". if it has the F.M. it will cause the clutch to slip.
