Does anyone know where I can get a 13 tooth front sprocket for the 450R? Not having alot of luck on the web. I want to try the 13 tooth sprocket to see how it feels against the stock 14 tooth sprocket. First gear is just a little tall on the trails unless you are hitting the RPMs. I'll try the Honda dealer tomorrow. I think the 400ex had a stock 15 that you could put a 14 tooth on though.

i havent really studied mine, but do you think a 13T meant for a 400EX would work? if i recall corectly, when i had a 88 warrior and my brother had a 88 banshee, the spockets could be interchanged but why? the warrior couldnt really do the 15T(?) front sprocket from the banshee in stock form.
The point is it seem honda would have made these things interchangable because that cuts production costs for them....

Im curious of how this turns out b/c I am thinking of gearing my front sproket down as well. i wouldnt call it a glimmering flaw but i wish honda wouldnt have done that! if 1st gear was lower, it would have be way better. i'll be lookin too...

 

All the Honda sutff should be interchangable. A sprocket for a 400EX should work. Check with the mechanic at the dealership.

I will bet that one tooth lower in front will be to much. It was to much for my 400EX....couldn't keep the front end down. But, it is a cheap experiment, so try it and let us know.

 

The tall first gear is the only complaint that I have so far on the 450R. From what I've heard, changing the rear sprocket can be a pain in the rear. Have either of you guys changed a rear sprocket and if so- is it hard, how long does it take.

So where do I find a 13 tooth sprocket for a 400ex then? 14 tooth is the lowest I've seen so far.

Worst case scenario, I'll just have to get used to revving a little more and slipping the clutch more in tight areas and hill climbs that are very technical. I did adjust the idle up just a little which helped some, but then the quad wants to run on it's own. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img] So I put it back to roughly the stock idle. I don't want to cause any issues by over idling the quad.

I wouldn't call it a flaw, just something I'll have to get used to or modify slightly for the type of riding that I will be doing mostly. From what I hear, changing the front sprocket is fairly easy, I just don't want to give up any speed in the drag. But I may have to. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

I rode trails hard last night for about two hours and broke the quad in. A little climbing, no real jumping yet. The 450r hauls @ss and really wants to be revved. It seems like the sweet spot is 3k-3500 RPMs on up. There was a noticeable difference in the handling of the performance compared to the 400ex. It just seemed like I could haul through trails at light speed and maneuver with ease. The 450R soaked up the whoops and bumps pretty well (better than my previous worcs shocks) but I think I am going to adjust the compression and rebound slightly for harder riding.

Have you guys adjusted the preload at all?

 

So far, I've found a Moose 13 tooth sprocket for the 03 400ex. I'll do some checking to see if it will work on the 450R.

 

The rear sprocket are real easy to replace, remove the 4 bolts and the rear wheel and the sprocket slips over the sprocket hub and off the axle.

 

???? I found the part number for the stock 450R front sprocket it is 23802-HP1-670 , I called honda and they said that part number also corresponded to an 81-83 cr250 sprocket.. Is that crazy or what.... So I may be able to get an aftermarket 13 tooth sprocket for the 81-83 cr250 that will work. That sounds a little weird, but who knows?

Any thoughts?

 

A 400ex front sprocket and a 250r front sprocket are different so there's a good chance that they will not interchange with the new R. If you are itching to experiment that badly, I'd say your best bet is to look around for something made for the CRF450.

The crf450 front sprocket is supposed to be the same as the front on a trx450r, every Honda dealer should have one. The rear is the same bolt pattern as the rear on a 400ex. It also makes sense if you think about it.
