Default KF 2004 TRX450R and CRF450R Engine Parts Comparison

This one didn't take long at all.

The only parts that these two engines share besides misc hardware[bolts/nuts/etc] and bearings and seals are the following.........

Rockerarm Shaft
All 4 Valve Springs
Clutch Friction Plates
Gear Shifter Drum
Gear Shifter Guide Plate


Everything else is unique to the TRX450R engine

I tried to tell that to the dealer in Michigan a few weeks ago, but he would not believe me. He kept saying that the 'motor would be so successful because it's a CRF450R motor' I explained that Honda used what they learned from the CRF450, but not the actual exact parts. Just another example of what dealers DON'T know.

I recently had a dealer in Sherman, TX tell me that putting synthetic oil in my Ranchers would ruin my auto clutch before I got down the street and the engine would never "break in" with synthetic oil. It never ceases to amaze me how their expertise is overrated by purchasers of their products. Which is why I visit forums for the real info.

well, there is some truth to what the dealer said about running synthetic oils during breaking.. Synthetic oil has a different friction characteristics and does slow down breakin and may cause it to not break in properly. The old fashiond dino oil is best before the first oil change. After the initial10-15 hours, you can change it to whatever type oil you want. However some sythetics do contain friction modifiers that effect standard clutches but i dont know it would effect an auto clutch.

Knowsalot- I have seen in print where the 2 use differnt valve springs? I had assumed that the dirt bike used a heavy duty version. thanks for clearing that up.

Whatwasthat I disagree with your assertion. Please scan vfrdiscussion.com and read articles posted by Scootr, an engineer at Southwest Research Institute (SR). FYI, SRI tests engines under controlled scientific conditions for the oil manufactures. Tribology is their forte.

In addition, bobistheoilguy.com is geared toward all petroleum subjects. Both Scootr and the engineers on the aforemention site have found through testing not rumors or ANECDOTAL opinions that breakin in engines with the proper synthetic oil is a sound practice.

Finally, friction modifiers are not contained in most motorcycle specific oils. Which are the oils we should be concerned with in this forum.

If you have any articles or facts to support your claims, please list them for viewing. I will be most happy to change my opinion under scientific facts you provide.

wow, they kept the CRF valve springs. surprising.

Is the crank offset in the TRX like it is in the CRF? I figured that Honda wouldn't do that in the TRX to promote even cylinder wall/piston loading.

Ya know, I haven't even thought to check on the offset yet. Sounds like a project for next week...LOL

First of all, speak with many atv owners on this forum, as I have seen just today a post dealing with synthetics and an auto clutch.

Second, synthetics w/o friction modifiers are fine for clutches. But they have been repeatedly refuted for the autos. This is not my primary point.

Third, You shouldnt be as concerned with the clutch as the rings. Synthetic oil wont break in the engine nearly as well as dino oil.
