Default 450r sprockets

yes i was just wondering if anyone has found a better sprocket to put on the 450r to give it more bottom end. I just raced a 370 Banshee yesterday and lost there’s just not enough power to get off the line. He got the whole shot and it was over form there i never made it into 5th gear so i need more bottom end

What are the stock sprockets on the 450r? What are the ones on the 400ex?

Do a search for this. It has already been discussed several times. In short, use a CRF450 13 tooth sprocket. A 400ex sprocket WON'T work.

I have the HRC kit and a crf450 front sprocket on mine. Now it is scary fast. Change the sprocket, but be careful as you won't expect the result. It's a totally new quad now. There is now wait for acceleration. If you bump the throttle, you better hang on.... The power response is immediate...

It costs $30 and takes less than a half hour to change.

Did your TRX come with the HRC kit, or did you get a chance to ride it stock first? I'm curious how much difference it makes. I've heard it rounds out the powerband quite a bit. I'm thinking when I get mine, I'll probably just do a sprocket change, and wait on the HRC kit. Wish you lived over here so I could drag with you and see first hand! ...unfortunately I gotta wait at least a month for it to show up...probably two.

I had them install the HRC kit before I rode it. Even then, first gear was way to tall for putting on the trails. I was really a bit disappointed at first. The bike would really come alive at 3k RPM or so and up. After I put the sprocket on, it was a whole new story.

Here are the results from a little racing that I did this weekend.

100 yard race on beach. stock tires.
450R with HRC kit, 13T front sprocket 210lb rider
400EX with airbox, jet, fmf.... 240lb rider. (roughly the same speed as a totally stock z400, if not a hair faster)

My friend is actually a better rider. He is much better at shifting at the correct RPM whereas I tend to hit the rev limiter more often.

The 450R would win by roughly 1/3rd of the total distance.

I really can't believe how quick it accelerates now. It will pull your friggin arms off.

Very cool. I'm so stoked. I can't wait 'till it comes in!

I'll definately buy the sprocket the day I pick up the bike, but I'll ride around with it stock first so I appreciate it more.

How did you brake it in? Although I've heard several theories on the subject, this sounds the most reasonable to me:

1) Ride it fairly easy until it gets nice and hot, never going over 1/2 throttle, but constantly varying the RPM's
2) Let it cool
3) repeat steps 1 and 2 a couple times, gradually increasing the amount of max throttle each run.
4) Change the oil
5) Ride it like you stole it.

The theory where you just skip to step 5 as soon as you get it home reminds me of my college days when I woke up 30 minutes late to a final. I jumped out of bed from a sound sleep, and ran two miles with my eyes shut because I was still asleap. I wouldn't wish that kind of stress on anything! I had the GPS on the quad and rode around for a couple of hours with short bursts of acceleration. I never went over 3rd gear or 50 mph. I put about 17 miles on. The book recommends 15 miles.

Next ride was with the new sprocket and no holds barred.
