Default 440 Kit + HotCam question

I am planning on going with the 440 kit and a Stage One HotCam on my 400EX. Is there some reason I should reconsider for a Stage Two? I ride mostly trail. Also, what will be the best plug to run? Any other tips that you think would help would be appreciated as I plan to do the work myself. Thanks in advance.

I am running a 440 kit with a stage 2 cam and I am very pleased with the power increase, just with the stage 2 cam you lose some bottom end compared to the stage 1 or the stock cam.

So do you think I should go with the stage one or two for mostly riding trail?

stg 1 for trail. You will get a lot more bottom, but coming from a stock motor to a stg 2 cammed motor, the bottom will seem so much better. However, the stg 2 is primarily a top end cam.

Ok, that is what I was thinking. Stage one for trail...low to mid power and stage two for mid to high. But someone was telling me that the stage one will choke up the engine and actually work against itself. Anybody out there actually running a 440 with stage one?

what they mean by choking up the motor is that it just won't have quite as much power as the stage two once you get to high speeds. besides that, the stage 1 is what i would get for trails. i have a stage 2 in my 406 and i really wouldn't get it for trails. however, for open areas like i ride in, its great. you will want to probally run the ngk drp9z. it is one step colder than stock but is recommended especially with a 440.

Default 440 Kit + HotCam question

I'm running the11:1, 440 kit and went from an XR cam to the stage 2. The xr was a monster on bottom end, and as such the stage 2 would be considered less on bottom end than this, but I'd never go back. I do a lot of slow first gear action, and for what the stage 2 gives up for arm jerking, it makes up for in smoothness. The xr cam would launch hard then just sorta play out. The stage 2 still has a great launch, but pulls to the rev limiter. I can't see the stage one having the hard hit of the xr on bottom. If I were comparing the stage 2/440/11:1 bottom end to a stock engine bottom end, I really doubt it'd be any big difference and the mid to top just hauls ***. The stage one wouldn't do it justice.

another tip, when u get your 440,and your ready to put it on the lower cases, were the sleeve slides into the cases, make sure it has some room to expand, the sleeve should be somewhat lose in the lower cases? Most cases were to 2 halfs meet, its not a perfect round,so when things heat up and the sleeve expands it tightness up on the piston, and can crack the piston. So just get something like a little grinder, and make room for the sleeve to have room.

Not a good idea here unless you like metal shavings in your engine, if you REALLY want to do this( i dont see why though) you will have to tear down the entire engine.
