The main jet is a 160 The bike is all stock. My BIL just bought it and that's all we know about the bike.

I think the engine is running rich. It smokes more than it should and doesn't accelerate like it should, or at least I think so. That leads me to thinking it's rich. And my 240lb frame runs side by side on my 350x vs 160lb on the 400ex. I think he should outrun me, don't you think?

Is there anyway to get the spark plug out without the factory spark plug wrench. The wrenches didn't come with the quad.

Forgot to add, it stumbles whenever you "blip" the throttle. It sputters for a second and then revs.
If the bike is all stock I would go back to the stock jetting. 160 main jet is way to much.

I went 1.5 turns. I know how easy it would be to do what you stated. Do you think I need to go back to 3 turns out? It ran pretty good Sunday night w/160 main and 1.5 turns out on the air. It wouldn't hardly run the last time we had it out before checking out the carb.

I ordered him a couple extra spark plugs and the stock main jet. Before I change too much, I'm going to run it in the daylight and see if it still smokes a little, couldn't tell in the dark nor in the barn, not enough light. That [smoking] indicates to me it was running rich, right?

i have seen many 400ex's smoke a little amount. i think a lot of it has to do with what oil your running. i would put the stock mainjet back in if it is stock. you should notice a nice increase in power by jetting it back down.

Does your 400ex have a stock air filter? (is it foam or wire with mesh)
Do you have a stock exhaust? (is it all black or aluminum etc.)

If you ride between 3 and 8000 ft of elevation you should be running a #142 main jet from 148 stock. You should be at three clips down from the top on your needle and stock #38 slow jet. The slow jet is right next to your main jet after you take your float bowl off. There is a number on the side of it. Your air mixture screw should be 1 and 1/4 turns out at this altitude. Check all of these components and you will likely be running even better.

I think so, it's pretty much like the one my 350X has, wire cage on the inside with a foam filter that slips over it.

Yes, it's all black and has Honda's writing on the back of it.

Dealer just sent me a couple of jets, one a 145 (he didn't have a 148) and a 138 (in case we ever go to the mountains) I live at 3,900 ft elevation, might go down to the Canadian River which would be about 3,200 ft. That's the primary areas we'll be.

I just pulled the spark plug out, it was a !#$$#!@, tight til the very end but the threads are fine on the plug, can't hardly see in the engine to check on those threads. Hopefully, they're alright. The plug was in there tight.

Thanks guys for the help. We're going to do some riding this weekend and try to get it fine tuned. Will update you on the results.
