This thing had been sitting at a friends house and hadnt been started in 12 years. He was gonna sell it to me for $500 but he now wants to trade it for a computer motherboard I had.

I spent 4 hours cleaning the old gas out and cleaning all the jets on the carb...

Once I put every thing back together I hooked up the battery charger to a battery dated 1989 click the electric start and it started up with 4-6 seconds. Let the engine warm up and then I drained the oil and put some new oil in.

Then took it for a ride and this sucker is FAST! Way faster then some of the newer ATVs I have ridden!

Why is this? Did they put a speed restriction on the newer bikes.

hey man i agree, i recently owned a 200sx cause a bought it cheap to play around on, the sx is very light at the front and has great bottom end for having only 199cc, im not sure why there so quick cause my cousin has a honda trx200 at the farm and my old sx beat it by 4 or 5 bike lengths. I raced a 91 blaster that was stock and he only beat me by 4 or so lengths at a halve mile, but what i do know is they give it all they got all at once, id like to get back in touch with ya if you dont mind just put somthing on a poll or my msn messenger is Grizzly_360@hotmail.com. ad me if u like if u got msn messenger if you would like,

Does the engine have "RFVC" stamped on it somewhere? I am no expert on this topic, but I remember that there were 2 different variations of the XR200 engine platform. One was the regular 2 valve head with weak cam bearings. The other engine was a RFVC (radial four valve combustion) engine that was very strong and racy. If you have the later (I bet that the SX was) it would be a lot peppier than a "normal" 200.

If you remember the RFVC bikes from the mid 80's, some had dual carbs, and other hot rod items, and they were known for great torque production and strong performance. I think that Honda was so far ahead of the pace during that time period, nobody really knew what the heck all this four valve stuff was. Now look at the current hot rod 4 stroke engines!

BTW - The term RADIAL from above is nothing more than a "new" nod to an old term from 2 decades earlier. That term has re-surfaced again today, it is all around you... HEMI!

I got a 1986 200SX for my 12th birthday. It was used, but was taken care of. I still have that thing. I runs like a champ every time I start it up. The tires are bald, all the fenders are cracked or missing, the breaks don't work, but that engine never gives up. It always has plenty of torque, and rarely gets bogged down. It climbs almost any hills, and rarely gets stuck in the mud if you keep the tires spinning. It's one of the most reliable ATV's I've ever seen.

that reminds me of my brothers honda 250 big red 3-wheeler. it had no brakes, plastics were cracked everywhere, suspension was shot, but bike wouldnt quit! he would climb the steepest hills ever and a lot of the time it would start going sideways he just jumps off and the bike does cartwheels down the hill lol, handle bars are a bit bend and she smokes pretty good but still starts and goes like a bat outta hell lol

i had an 86 200sx also and used to ride with buddy with a 450 foreman and would walk off from him. he would top out at 49 and i would just keep on goin. i would say at most it would run 55. couldnt hardly kill it though. it looked like you dropped it out of an airplane and it still started and run great.

I bought a 1986 TRX200SX back in the 8th grade for $500.00, I am now 31 years old and still use it around my fathers house where i ran the heck out of it at, with friends blasters, banshee's and foremans- sand, snow, drounded a few times. The engine is a shim bucket design simular to a street bike where there are no rocker arms, the valves act directly on the cam, great power as it will lift the light front end easily in a hard 1st to 2nd shift! This engine was only used in this quad and also the honda fat cat 200. My SX's top speed was 55MPH with the tires aired up real high revved to the moon Its a fun quad, when we got to a downed tree we simply threw it over the tree and let it filp upside down it needed be, we didnt care... its still running strong as ever and I have been offered four times what i paid for it more than 20 years later! Hondas really are like gold!
