Rancher ES Hard shifting
#1
I have 2 new quads, mine is a 2004 Rancher AT...the wife has a 2004 Rancher 350 ES. My question is the ES shifts hard, when sitting still in neutral and I put it into 1st gear it will lunge forward. Is this normal?? I tried adjusting the clutch but it made no difference. The Rancher AT when in the ES mode is very smooth you don't feel it shift or even hear it. Both units have about 15 hours on each. Anyone else have a hard shifting problem??

Thanks for the reply!!! I was surprised that the difference between the 350ES shifting and the 4x4 AT was so much different. I did not want to travel the 60 miles to the shop just for them to tell me it was normal. I will tell the wife to hold on tight going into first gear!!!

No...The idle is as low as I can set it before the engine wants to die. I think it may just be normal for the 350. The 400 4x4 AT shifts really smooth when set in the ES position. I was expecting the same or close to it for the 350.

You'll probably notice that it gets better once the engine is warmed up. Usually what causes it is the cold oil between the clutch plates doesn't readily slip, so when you engage any gear for the first few times, it's going to be rough. I went through the same thing on every bike I've ever owned that had a wet clutch. Nature of the beasts. My 400 jumps a bit the first time I engage low gear, then it gets better as it heats up the oil. On a quad with a manual clutch, you can engage and disengage the clutch a few times, before dropping it into gear, it helps quite a bit. In her and my case, you hold on.. the 400 AT has a totally different transmission, the same as the Rubicon, I think. It has no clutch per se, simply a hydraulic pump and motor arrangement.

MIne shifts really hard also. Or should i say loud.
Also, i noticed when reading reviews the same noises were mentioned so it didnt really bother me.
ATV Television had a past review on the ranchers.
But it has yet to fail me. At least i know it is still shifting when i hear the clank.
