Does anyones 400 AT have an Engine clatter??
#1
I was wondering if you guys with the 400 AT have experienced any engine clatter mainly in esp with the rpm's kind of high? I have ridden 3 now and all 3 made the same noise. It sounds like a loud clatter. However I went to the dealership today and hopped on a new 400 AT and it didn't make the sound at all. Mine has done it since I bought it. The other two that I rode other then mine said the same thing. The guy said that possibly the valve needs to be adjusted. I have asked this question on here before I was just wondering if anyone had gotten their's fixed or is the noise just normal or could it be the valve or something else? Thanks for any replys

It is funny you ask. I was riding for a few hours yesterday and I really heard a clattering noise also. It really sounds like the valves do need adjusted, But I think its the tranny making the noise. Its louder than my old 230 Suzuki.
I had my first service(awhile ago) and told the tech guy about it and I think he adjusted the valves. He was out to lunch when I picked my quad up so I didn't get to talk to him. I would like to take it back and get serviced again but I don't want to get in the habit of taking the quad back every 120-140 miles to get serviced. I can change the oil myself and planned on doing it, but I maybe taking it back soon to get looked at. If I wanted to take a quad back every 120-140 miles I would have bought a Polaris.
Honda said this is a "simpler" version of the Rubicon tranny. In todays world the world "simpler" usually means "cheaper" also. This is why I bought the extended warranty. First year bike, couldn't take a chance on having to pay to repair that tranny.
Keep in touch and let us know if you hear anything from your dealer. I am going to call my service guy tomorrow to see if he has heard or seen anything. He's a pretty good guy and I think he would tell me if he knew anything.

My Rancher At purred like a kitten when I first got it and still does after the valves were adjusted and the oil changed. I took it around the block and pushed it up to 45 mph in auto, and esp, no known noise. Love my machine.

I talked to my service guy today. He said that he has not heard of any problem or excessive clattering noise from the AT's. I am going to take my quad in for a oil change in the next week or two. He said he would check the valves at that time . I will let you know if he has to adjust them.

I haven't had any problems with engine clatter - I'll be taking my 400AT in this weekend for service. I've got about 97 miles on it and this is the first service. I'll be taking it out next weekend for some riding. I'll let you know if the technician has heard of any problems that you describe.
