Starting point for a Kehein 39mm PWK
#1
I got my hands on a 39mm PWK a while back and just recently put it on the R. I know I really shouldn't expect much from it considering that I still have on my nearly stock cylinder, and I probably shouldn't even have put it on, but I did. My questions are, where should I start out on my jets. I believe it was set up for a really hot motor and it came from a different area with a higher elevation so I am just completely clueless. I also know that the pilot jet has been changed out and there was no main jet at all. I installed a 165 main jet and it read a little lean but it was one of the longer hexagon jets. Is this the correct type or jet or do I need to get one of those round jets or a short hexagon? Also, with the main jet out- the needle protrudes past the threads where the main jet screws in- this is very odd to me.
I can jet a carb up pretty nicely. But with this new carb and with the shape that I got it in, I am completely lost. Can a few of you guys tell me what you are running for a pilot jet for a starting point and any other info you may have.
Thanks,
JP

I'm running a PWK 38 QVAS on my 89 R and I love it. Wouldn't go back.
The jets for your stock PJ34 fit the 38 or 39 just fine.
Your needle is the most important adjustment you will make in this carb. Which needle do you have? I strongly recommend the CEJ needle. Start your jetting with this needle and not only will it run better, but it will be easier to jet and dial-in.
Needle height is VERY important to get this carb to run correctly. One clip position is a HUGE adjustment. I adjust in .1 MM for my needle height.
Start at clip 4 and go down from there...
What elevation are you? which pipe and filter are you running.

THANK YOU GUYS!!
250Rlover- I will find out what needle I have tonight and if it is not the CEJ, where could I get one the quickest. ESR? I know my shop in town will just look at me weird if I start talking about this stuff.
I live at about 500 feet above sea level, I have an fmf gold series, uni air filter, and mildly ported cylinder. I know with this carb I should have a heavily ported cylinder, but the guy who is porting my other cylinder isn't done yet and since he is doing it for free I really can't complain. I also want to get it in the ball park before I throw on the new jug with the higher compression.
