450R questions??
#1
Ok,,well I need some good advice and from as many people...I'm thinking about selling my 2000 polaris scrambler and taking the plunge in getting a 450R....Is this a good idea??? I have some questions though about the 450R.....How comfortable is it to ride? (I do a lot of trailriding and usually ride all day), what is its top speed stock???(my scrammy is around 65 stock), Is shifting gears smooth??(I want it to shift smooth), How is the turning on it (It doesn't have reverse so I was wondering if turning was real good to were I wouldn't need reverse that much to get out of jams.........what is the price range for the 2004 450R??? I love wheelies...is this a wheelie machine??? Give me an idea on dry weight and weight when everything is in it if you can??? Would this be a good trail quad??? The kickstart...is it easy to kickstart...I'm use to electric start...and don't know about the kickstart so if you have some info on that and also the hot switch..whats the deal with that??? and last question....Should I sell my scrammy which I put my $$$ in and love so dearly and buy a 450R???? I love the 4x4 500 scrammy but I'm thinking its time to upgrade to something new???? I need info.........Thanks!~~~~~~~~~quadracer

I still got to make some suspension changes but it seems like the harder you ride it the smoother is gets. I was riding today in 4th and 5th gear and the suspension worked awesome, slowing riding is alil more rough but not bad. I havent rode it for a full day so i cant tell you how you would feel, i felt fine after an hour.
Top speeds is mid 70's, its geared alil higher then most sport quads. But on the snowmobile trails i ride on its perfect, i wont be switching sprockets.
I had a ds650 before the R and my DS650 shifted more smooth, but the more i break in the 450 the better it gets. With my DS i couldnt feel a click or anything when switching gears, it was so smooth.. the 450rs is alil more notchy.
Turning isnt so sharp, some people have done simple mods to make it turn tighter.. but i dont think its bad. If youre smart youll stay out of jams.
Price all depends where you live, low 6's would be a good deal.
You wont have a problem doing wheelies.
Weight is around 350 lbs dry, takes 3.5 gallons gas, under 2 quarts of oil and i dont know how much antifreeze.
I weigh 155 soaking wet, i can start it with my left foot on the left peg and give it a nice smooth kick and it will start right up. Started on one kick for me today when it was cold, and started on every first kick when it was warm.. i love the kick start. The hot start is for when its warm, leans it out a bit so its easy to start.
Its all up to you on what you want to do, try test driving one if you can. If you got the money i sure as hell would.
If you have anymore questions just ask or pm me.

i jus got the 450R and haven't been out on a trail yet (i'm going tommorrow) but i have been ridin it up and down my street to break in the motor a bit. the quad is very comfy, its a better fit for a tall guy than the yfz. the kickstart is easy, the only catch is that if u hit the throttle while its off, to clear the carb for it to start, u have to kick it over a bunch of times, which can get tiring/annoying. the stock horsepower is about 37 with the yfz bein about 39. its top speed is right about the same as the banshee (73mph or so) and first gear is pretty tall. the turning is pretty good, u wont need reverse if u ride smart. the dry weight is 350lbs, but with fluids and everything its about 375. the front end is very light, the motor is positioned near the back of the frame, so wheelies are almost too easy. it wants to wheelie during hard acceleration (on the street ne way).

crobiker, if you havent heard.. dont ever give it gas to start it, bad things can happen. If its cold, just give it some choke. Im just writing to make sure you knew that which you probably do but someone didnt and they ended up with a cracked case. Pass this on to anyone you know thats getting a new 450r.

now for my input... its a nice quad... starts easy and handles well... and comfortable...
it weights around 378 filled with all the fluids.
it wheelies quite easy, shifts very smooth.
the hot start is self explainitory... you push the switch to start the engine when its warm, i think all kick start 4-strokes have them, on the trx i found it hard to start w/o using it when needed.

Thanks for you input guys...ya I'm trying to get my scrambler ready so I can sell it...I hope to get a 450R at least by the beginning of june...the only prob...they are about $6500 bucks!!! ouch...but I really want one and I'm one of those people that get what they want...granted I'll be in debt for a good while..but you only live once right?!!!! And plus I want a brand new quad to take off the show room floor!! See I was debating on the yfz, raptor, and the 450R...and then I narrowed it down to the yfz and the 450R and I hear that pretty much both machines come close to each other and they are both great machines...So I had to go by looks and a few other preferences..So I'm going for the trx..So crossing my fingers I can get my quad up and sold and then be loading up a new 450 real soon!! Thanks again for your guyses help...and I know if I get this 450R then I'm going to be needing a lot more in the future!

For all the questions you asked, id say yes to everyone of them. They wheelie real easy, they are great trail quads, easy to start, Shifting is very smooth, they can turn very tight, and are extremely easy to kick around, top speed is around 75/76, they are very comfortable for trail riding, they can climb hills better than my banshee without as much room, etc, sounds like you should jump up and get one.
