Default Is it hard to change a clutch on 86 250r?

my clutch just went out on my 86 fourtrax 25or and was wondeirng if its something i can do myself? im not sure if its the clutch though. my brother took the quad out and it just wouldnt grab anymore. i can start it and let the clutch out but its barely moves like the clutch is barely grabbing. but you figure it would slip first then go out? what clutch kits would you recommend and where should i buy them from. im also looking for a new twist throttle. give me some info. thanks

Sounds like you just need to adjust your clutch lever. Might give that a try before you start tearing into it. Just a suggestion.

You should be able to change it without much trouble at all, it's very simple. As far as clutch kits go, you can get aftermarket or factory, either will work. Most of the aftermarket clutch kits will come with heavy duty springs which can make clutch pull slightly stiffer. I recommend changing all plates and springs seeing that your quad is an '86 model......have you ever replaced the plates in it?
Check out Motion Pro twist throttles.

Time for the 89 update. Look at your actuating arm, rod, ball bearing, clutch cable and clutch discs. Even the basket should be checked for wear. Real easy job. No need to take to a shop to do these things.

250ex is right get the 89 upgrade kit, you could get it from Nacs for about $59. It will make a world of difference.

As for changing the clutch itself, I would go with a stock one. I have had a stock clutch on my 310 engine for about a year and a half now with no problems. This is great considering the about of paved drags I do.

Changing the clutch is no problem, first drain the radiator fluid, pop off the waterpump cover, drain the tranny oil, then take off the cover (the bolts down by the brake lever could be tricky to get at) and you are at the clutch.

Make sure you soak the new clutch plates in oil, some say to leave them soaking overnight.

To put eerything back just reverse the proccess and make sure you buy a new clutch cover gasket and water pump gasket.

Personally I think your problem could probably be solved with the 89 update kit.

what is the update clutch kit. i check it on nacs racing but what does it do? i will still need a clutch kit with this right? is it direct bolt in or are there some modification that need to be done to make it work. i havent had a chance to look at my service manual or break it down yet but i take a look at it soon. anyway to tell if i have it already? i bought the bike from honda dealer but i came from a racer who has several trophies on the bike and mods but i not sure what they are. i know my quad has more heat then my friends to 250r have no idea what engine mods are on there.

The 89 update kit uses a needle bearing at the end of the lifter rod instead of a ball. The difference is a more possitive feel on the clutch. Also, with the old style ball, if you ride the clutch too much or tighten the clutch cable too much, this will cause excessive friction on the lifter ball and eventually weld the ball to the lifter rod. When this happens the lifter rod will start spinning when even you hold the clutch in. This eventually will bore a hole in the bottom of the lifter level and cause the clutch level to get sloppy and eventually break through.

I when through 3 ball, rod lifter combos before I install the updater kit. I've never had a problem since.
