recon motor
#1
My friend has a 2001 recon, and his motor is messed up. We were wondering if a 250ex motor would work in the recon. If so, will it bolt up exactly the same as the recon motor. Also, how well do you think this motor will perform in the recon. What are the differences in the recon motor and the 250ex motor? aren't they basically the same thing?

We are not sure what is wrong with it yet, but what was happening was while you were riding every once in a while it would blow some blackish grayish smoke out of the exhaust. I think blew the smoke out mostly when he let off the gas. And it would also just die while you were riding it at various times, sometimes when you try to take off, and other times just after you hit a little jump. It would act like you had turned the key off or something, and after it died, the only way to get it to start again was to choke it. After you got it up and running, it would run fine again. It ran like this for a while, but it had some power loss, and it was starting to not run very well. And one night i got it running good and hot, and it started to die, so I pulled the choke and kept it going, but when i put the choke back in, it wouldnt run, so I had to keep the choke out for it to run, and after a minute or two, it wouldnt run at all. So now it won't even start. Since then we have taken the motor out of it, and have taken the motor apart. We can not find anything that is really out of the ordinary. Do anyone have any ideas?
Yes, there was oil in it, he had just put oil in it a day or two before all these problems started. And another thing, the day he was ridng it, and it was acting up, we checked the oil in it, just to make sure there was oil, and the oil in it was very hot, it was steaming in there. I don't quite know what kind of a problem this could be indicating.

did he have too much oil in it causing the rings to warp. if there was oil in the air box there probablly is too much oil in it. in other aspects u could have a piston ring that was shot letting oil in the compression chamber.
if he was over revving for a long period of time maybe the piston could have gotten a hole in it, happened to a freind of mine and it sounds like the same problems he had.

Kinda sounds like it has been running to lean to me. If pulling the choke helped it run it could of been lean, and running lean for an extended period of time will cause alot of heat and eventually a failure. Did any of this happen to begin after any mods have been done? The oil in the airbox could be from a few things, if it had to much oil, you had been doing wheelies with it or had it on any extreme angle could put oil into the airbox.
