The axle should definetly not be loose inside the bearings. Are the bearings loose in the carrier? If so,you might be able to keep them in place with some bearing mount,as long as they aren't so loose
they will spin in the carrier. After assembly you should not have any play in the axle.Make sure the axle nuts are tight and tape them up with electrical tape when your done.It sounds like at the very least your axle bearings are shot, and maybe your carrier too.

sounds like your carrier is junk. that happens when the rear bearing go bad and are left to chew it all up inside. Save your self the time and get a new carrier. A good one to buy is available through Magic Racing, find there add in Dirt Wheels. The carrier im talking about is made by Speed and is a dual roll bearing carrier with bearings already pressed in. Good price and quality. Make sure that the axle nut is tight. I check mine after every ride. One other thing you could do is tighten it and tac weld both nut and lock nut together. Not a big weld just to hold. OR buy a anti-fade nut.$$$ tho Good Luck

Yes, it can happen and unfortanetly it sounds like yours is ruined. The axle bearings were bad for awhile and wore the carrier out of round. An aftermarket carrier is the way to go,such as a Lone Star. They almost all come with twin row bearings,a grease fitting and will outlast the stock unit.It will cost around $250.Replacement twin rows are availble at any decent auto parts store and cost a lot less than stock sealed bearings from Honda.
