Riding Death...

2 months ago near here a man at work crested a blind hilltop on a snowmobile--OOPS, a big truck belonging to the same company was coming the other way. The snow machine was so loud the guy did not hear the truck. Same ending as your story. Last weekend a lady had to be rescued from her crashed quad 25 miles offroad on doulbetrack. The hospital helicopter could not even reach her crash site., had to pick her up a mile away. It took rescuers over 2 hours to reach her, they did so only by borrowing quads from other riders nearby. The lady was in critical condition in the hospital at last report. No word on if she wore a helmet. Be careful out there...

Sad news. I know a lot of good people hurt or KIA due to poor judgement, poor riding, or just plain bad luck. Example, good friend riding snowmobile through hilly fields, jumped a terrace, landed directly on top drainage pipe sticking up out of ground. Pipe speared straight through bike into my buddies chest. He wasn't checking out his riding path first before pinning it. We all know that walking the "track" ahead of time is what makes a rider aware of obstacles and riding lines. Ride safe y'all!

I've seen that happen at Silver Lake many times. I remember a guy on a dirt bike hit one of those big green DNR 4X4 trucks in the front right fender. Didn't see it happend but I saw the wreckage. They had to tow the truck out of the dunes because the impact pushed the front axel out the far side to the truck. Someone on the scene told me that he was flying wide open and didn't seem see the truck crossing infront of him.
I saw some guys from Holland Michigan jumping their 400EXs over and over for about an hour on the same hill. They drew a crowd because they were doing freestyle moves. No one in that crowd was paying attention enough to wave them off before jumping when a buggy pulled up right where they were landing their jumps - on the backside of the hill. The 400EX landed right on top of the sand rail and pinned the people inside it. I don't think anyone died but they were messed up bad. It took an hour or more to get them to the hospital.
Another time a couple flipped their jeep and crushed their kid under the roll bar. The child wasn't belted in but the adults were.
There have been many other incidents. I don't think a weekend goes by without someone getting mangled or killed out there. Almost every weekend that I've been there, I've seen something sick happen. Sometimes I wonder if people go there to commit suicide but have it look like an accident.

My brother survived sorta the same thing. Last year we were riding at a new place and kinda got into a drag race with each other, well he made it to the hill first and when he jumped the hill the other side had humongus ruts crossing the trail, well when he landed and hit the ruts he got launched into the air and onto his head. When I got to him he was knocked out and unresponsive. Luckily for him I am a firefighter/EMT and could administer first aid and C-spine immobilization. After a few minutes he came to and we crept back to the truck. Had he not had his helmet and chest protector on I could have lost my best friend that day. So remember, no matter how experienced you are, things happen. If you aren't familiar with the area take it easy 'til you are. Take care and be safe out there.

WHATS UP WITH THAT!!! Not belting your kid in while you are, thats just plain unforgivable.

What is it about riding fast that makes people think that they are untouchable...I wonder if it age, I sure know that I am a lot more careful now that I am a few years older and have a wife and kid.

I almost joined the statistics myself at little Sahara, OK during snakehunt. Long story short, a dune buggy flew over the dune and I got to inspect the undercarriage. The buggy's back tire landed flush with my quad's front tire. Another foot to the right and they would have killed or seriously maimed me. I would have to say that people who drive dune buggies are the worst about not paying attention or respecting others, but there are a number of quad and motorcycle riders who give them a run for their money.
Riding an ATV is a heck of a lot of fun, but as a community we need to do more to police ourselves and others. Lucky to be alive right now.

i was at sand lake, or and a 20 year old, give or take a few years, toped his new yfz450 out on the flat. and for thoes that have been there, thers spots about 15 feet across that has no sand and its just a sheet of rock. going on to it there is about a 6 in drop and going off there is about a 10in ledge of sand. keep in mind he is doing about 70mph and he hit one of these and it sent him off of his quad, over his handlebars and on to his head. i got there just after it happend and he was laying there convulsing right by the parametics and then he raised his arm up and then it just fell right to the gound. he died, they rolled the sheets over him and loaded him up. the helmet couldent save him. i witnessed this with my friend. i am 14 same with my friends and we had to see this. i almost did the exact same this on my 400ex a day before, i hit the same bump and i went into an endo doing about 65mph. justing back on it how my life could have ended right there. i can tell you that i always slow down during that part of the dunes. people need to keep there eyes out for these things and first go slow and ride around so you can see what kind of terrain you are dealing with.
