My 400ex is supposed to be in monday. I was wondering how you guys properly break one of your machines in? Also, how many hours/tanks of gas is needed before i should take the 400ex to the dealer for the tune up? Thanks!!

I've heard that you want to ride it pretty easy (under 1/2 throttle) for the first two tanks of gas, and make sure you don't rev it too high. Also, don't just cruise at a constant speed, be on and off the throttle (to make sure the bearings wear on both sides or something). First service (change oil, filter, and check valves) should be after 20 hours of use, or roughly 4-5 tanks of gas.

ride it like you normally would. Just don't stay at a constant speed for long periods of time

And don't go wide open that often. 5 or 6 tanks of gas. I did that in a week I loved mine so much. Watch the screws that hold the side cover plastic on and the black footpeg plastic! They will fall out.

I believe the break in on a yellow 400ex is the same as a the break in on a red one. hee-hee..

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I rode my bike at no more than 3/4 throttle for the first two and a half tanks of gas, but I just couldn't keep my thumb out of the carb after that. Not sure if I did any damage, BUT, at Cochranton this year, My 400EX was one of the few that didn't foul the plug first thing in the am.

I hope Honda does something about there cold blooded problem, otherwise, the cook.

Oh yeah, and if My bike had reverse, I'd be less inclined to buy the new Rapter 660, but I think my checkbook will be getting a workout!
