I have no experience on the race, I think it would be pretty close depending on mods. However, on the starting difficulty for the R, from what others have been saying and the way it's setup, especially with the hot-start button, it won't be nearly as difficult as many may try to make it sound. In fact, when it's cold outside, or you're just in a situation where electric starting would be difficult, you'll be thankful for that kick-starter. No need to worry about walking home if the battery fails. There was a post somewhere on here a few days ago about a TRX and 2 YFZs going through some deep water. They all stalled at one point or another and the TRX fired right up with 2 kicks while the YFZs were still trying to get the "magic buttons" to work. Honda craftsmanship, I'm tellin ya people!

As for the race it is 80% skill but I would think the 450 will beat a pred if its stock vs stock. As for starting I have had no issues with mine what so ever. Even after riding for 3 hours in 70 degree weather. Personally both of these quads would be a nice addition to your home.

yamaha4eva, learn how to read the entire original post and then go back to your yamaha board. the man asked about a drag race and how well it starts. i think an example of its starting in a nasty situation is a perfect reply. i think your just jealous that the yfz doesnt have a kickstarter. nathan.

I don't know if I've ever seen a courteous post from yamaha4eva. Always seems to be running off at the mouth for one reason or another Just takes the enjoyment out of the forums. Everyone has a right to post their opinions, but some people just have to call people down for the sake of it!

Sobemelahead, as far as a drag goes between the 2 bikes, I have no idea, but as far as the starting goes, I had my 450R out for its' first real run on Saturday and starting was a piece of cake. When the bike was cold, 2 kicks with the chole on and it fired right up, after it is warmed up, starts first kick with the hot start button everytime (as long as you remember to turn on the key ). I was very impressed with the way this bike worked.

Starting the 450r is very easy. One you get your 450 if you can't start it in 1 kick then you will need to adjust your fuel/air screw. Sometimes the dealer will have the screw tightened all the way up. Most people keep the screw about 2 turns out. Also if you need to go more than 3 turns out it's time to go up one size in pilot jets.

Ok so now we have that taken care of I will share my personal experience with drag racing a predator. As of last weekend I've not been beaten by a predator. If you own a 450R with just the HRC kit (which I highly recommend) then you might have a tough time getting the holeshot but the massive power of the R takes over very quickly. By the time you get ready to shift into 4th you should be a good 1-2 quad lenths infront. For the rest of the race you should be out front. Basically you answered your own question. It will all come down to rider skill.

The Predator outweighs the 450R by nearly 50#. With a 13t I got a holeshot and held onto the lead every time. This was on sand up comp hill.

Default 450R vs Predator

I have a 2003 Predator with a new 04 Engine

My brother has a new 450R

Drag race's on ashpalt 1st, 2nd gear 450R has the advantage cause of the bottom end power it has over the Predator

3rd - 5th Predator pulls away with its midrange and top end power.

With 15-36 gearing instead of the stock 14-37 gearing on the Predator same thing 450R has 1st -2nd but the Pred pulls away even more.

We always use the clutch on the Predator for each shift and I do also for the 450R but my brother thinks his 450R is a tad faster speed shifting it but still can't catch the Predator to run even with it. We are of equal weight and rider experience and switch quads.

The 450R starts easily usally first kick but is still not a fast as pushing a button, but it does start hard if you don't turn the gas off and put it up on its hind-end. The seat is wicked hard on it also and it doesn't turn nearly as sharp as the Predator exspecially on ashpalt.

The Predator is wider which is nice but its heavy, but right now is on a diet in my garage with some drilling and lots of grinder work before the frame is painted, 04 rear hubs, and four new lighter tires should help alot.
