250R vs. 450R vs. YZF450

JMO, whether or not the yfz is better than the 450r is personal preference. I like the fact that the 450r has no sudden surges or a mid-range "hit" in the power band, and the ergos r better for me (6'1"). my good friend has a yfz that i tried riding before i got my quad and it feels too small, and even standing up its uncomfortable for me. we've ridden trails, dunes, pikes peak type roads, drags, and jumping, and we keep up with each other in every area, except drags because i weight a good 60lbs more than him. he's a smaller guy and the 450r felt big to him. in stock form, it's up to rider preference as to whether or not one is better than the other.

i am the proud owner of a two 88 250r's one stock and one mod with a esr 330 3mm stroker 38mm carb esr pipe and reeds and midrange porting runs vp race gas only. it also features tbr front end and axis shocks it is a awesome bike and completely restored i have probably over 15,000. and i still want a tbr swingarm and axis rear shock. the bike is fast and handles awesome!
at horsefall oregon last weekend i drag raced up boxcar several times against a yfz450 and a trx450r with identical mods pipes and drag paddles. the yfz got me by a bike length every time and i was dead even with the trx450r. the only dissadvantage i had was my sand skate 1's which are a cornering tire with minimal bite.
the bottom line if you want the most for your dollar get a new 4 stroke if you have been dune riding for 22 years like me and love the legendary 250r and dont care about spending money get one they are awesome. the new bread of fourstokes are great and i plan on buying a yfz450 in the next year but i will never part with my 250r, they are classic quads that cant be replaced. any new comer can go by a 450 but wont now anything about the bike that started it all!

dragracer, your claiming that with bolt ons your 250r can run with a 450r with similar bolt ons? Come on guy I'm not tryin to be an a** but your dreamin unless your talkin about a bolt on big bore kit or head porting. My stock 450r will run with piped, carb'd, etc. Banshees. In order for a 250r to do that they've gotta be powervalved/big bored/ & or ported. I'm not flaming as I owned a 250r previously and still love them but in my experience in the sand it isnt even a competition. I raced several quads this past week and the only things beating me were Banshees and a 686 raptor.
By the way a 250R with a big bore kit, porting, and some decent bolt on stuff is pretty fast. For example a guy up here just go a 330 bolt in kit and he ran a 4.7 first pass. I would LOVE to see a piped banshee do that....

I know 250's with pipe, big bore, etc are fast . I owned one. And no the banshees didnt run like crap and no they werent bein ridden by 12yr olds. Why do you have such a hard time believing that the 450 can hang with them? I dont doubt that your quad is fast but I know that a 450r with similar mods as you would give you a hell of a good race. Maybe win maybe lose I dont knowfor sure. What I do know is that the new fourstrokes arent like what granpappy rode

Good point speedbump.
The 2 stroke VS 4 stroke battle is different on sand though than on pavement. 4 strokes by design don't spin like 2 strokes do,
which gives them a big advantage especially on their low end holeshot. The results would probably be reversed on pavement or hard
packed ground.

i have a 88 250R with a pipe, filter, and v-force reeds and i got a stock 450R . on my dirt road in about 100 yards the 450R will be it 4 out 5 times. the 250R also has 12-39 gearing. but it depends on how good of a grips it gets off the line. if i (450R) get the jump i pull about 2 lengths, but if my dad(250R) gets a good jump then we are dead even the whole way. i weigh 160lbs and he weighs 210lbs.

speedbump- I acually never said the the 450s with same mods as me wont be as fast. In my first post I said that they should be pretty close, its just when it comes to drags the shee rules most of the time, and a piped shee is pretty quick for what it is (in a drag) and compared to others, and also if you max all four out with mods the shee would win, then 250R, then the 450s. Now im basing ALL this on what I have seen and expierenced, and from that I have seen that the YFZ is faster than the 450R (but by much thow) and that they are the "quickest" 4-strokes out there, but when worked still wont be as fast as the quads "old grampy" used to ride.
