Who's the Honda ATC Guru

on a Honda 1984 ATC, a 200X, maybe a 250X, is it possible to put the oil filter in backwards, , If the oil filter is put in backwards, will the top end still get lubed, will the top end burn up. The Engine was repaired at a local shop , the top end was burnt, Valves, rocker Arms, the works , We mounted the engine, changed the oil and filter, it run for a couple days, then burn up again in the top end (same). The non- Techs at the shop said the oil filter was in backwards and that was the cause of the scorching. Smells to me, ., Can anyone give me the lowdown, Thanks---------- 1stcav

I think you can put them in backwards.
The newer style filters plainly say if I am correct , This side out or something to that effect
backwards will cause damage to motor

1stcav,
The only larger Honda ATC models with an oil filter element like you describe are the 85-87 ATC250ES, 85-87 250SX, and 85-86 350X.
All 3 use the same oil filter and they CAN be installed backwards causing the topend to fry in no time at all.
All 1998-Up Hondas use the same filter but no with a slightly redesigned oilfilter cover that prevents such foul ups.....however, as others here have already mentioned,..Honda brand oil filters have it clearly worded on the oil filter as to how it is to be installed and has done so since the late 1980s when this was a common screw up with the shade tree mechanics.
Most of the non-OEM filters on the market to this very day lack this information.
