My very first RancherES problem
#1
I finally experienced the anticipated ES problem that I've heard of. I went out and got pretty muddy a couple of weeks ago and I cleaned the quad up as I normally do. The other day I went to start it up and I couldn't get it in neutral. I know that sometimes you have to rock it back and forth just like the foot shifter models but this was different. The up/down buttons did nothing. I kept messing with them until finially the made contact and I shifted up and down a few times until everything was normal.
Is this what others have seen with the foremanES? Is the something I can do to prevent it. I think the contacts where dirty and that kinda disappoints me that these electrcal contacts wouldn't be more resistant to dirty water.
Ride em hard and put em up wet....

Texaswarrior,
I haven't experienced this yet on my Rancher. Have you taken apart the ES button assembly to check the contacts & make sure they didn't corrode or something. If they did, I would silicon the "assembly" to help keep water out in the future.

IT is usually because one the buttons get stuck in because of the mud that got pushed in as you were shifting! If you are in the woods when this happens splash some water on them and will usually fix you up.Spray contact cleaner in the grooves of the buttons at home.

Greetings,
Are you sure you shut it off in neutral? If you didn't, it has a hard time finding it again. I did this several times when my 450ES was new and used the manual over-ride to wrench it back to neutral. If the instrument pod showed a dotted line, that may be it -- no problem at all.

My understanding of the problem that most Ranchers have is not associated with the swith on the Handlebars but the actual shift mechanism itself. This usually occurs when the shifter is hot. It sounds like your problem will be easy to fix and prevent.

no it wasn't shut off in N but I'm familiar with that. I haven't ever had to use the manual shift to get it back but typically if you rock it back and forth that'l do the trick. My Recon is the same way.
Greg, i've heard of what your talking about. Mine had been sitting a few days after cleaning it.
This just felt as though no contact was being made when you pressed the up/down buttons. I'm thinking dirty water is allowed to seep into the unit or perhaps the pressure washer might have forced it in. Either way I'll try something like what goattrotter said to water proof it.
